Crime Log: January 20 – January 26

January 30, 2014
Entry of the week: Thursday, Jan. 23, 5:31 p.m. A staff member called to report a purple backpack containing a Windows laptop, a wallet and other personal items was stolen from the Sacred Space in Ell Hall. The victim stated she was meditating for about 15 minutes and when she was finished, the bag was gone. The bag was about 15 feet from her, and she did not see or hear anyone else in the area.

Entry of the week: Thursday, Jan. 16, 10:53 a.m. A student reported someone took her underwear from the laundry room in West Village H. He tied them together in knots and wrote inappropriate messages on them.

DivestNU rallies for oil divestiture

January 23, 2014
Students in DivestNU, an on-campus sub-committee of the Husky Environmental Action Team, gathered in Krentzman Quadrangle to march to President Joseph E. Aoun’s office on Jan. 17. The committee delivered NU HEAT’s petition against the university’s investments in the fossil fuel industry that contribute to climate change.

Legacy of racial tension felt in Raytheon Amphitheater

Douglas Blackmon’s illuminating book, “Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II,” has been honored with a New York Times Bestseller listing and a Pulitzer Prize. On Friday, it received another, humbler honor: the author made an appearance in Northeastern’s Raytheon Amphitheater, where he spoke about his novel and invited in the beginnings of what could prove to be an expansive discussion about race among interested students and faculty.

Budget priorities survey reveals students’ concerns

The 2013 Budget Priorities Survey by the Student Government Association (SGA) revealed that most surveyed students emphasized the importance of instructors’ qualities and evaluations and were dissatisfied with the lack of accessibility to NUwave in residence halls.

President Aoun’s salary increases

President Joseph E. Aoun was recently ranked the second highest paid private college president in the United States in 2011 – the most recent year for which data is available – according to a December report in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Aoun’s $3,121,864 was second only to Robert Zimmer of the University of Chicago, who topped the list at $3,358,723.

Sexual violence impacts students

A female Northeastern student, who requested anonymity to protect her identity, was walking down Boylston Street while listening to music with her earphones. It was on Sept. 6, when a tall, slim, blonde, white man in his 20s wearing “dressy, black shiny shoes” approached her and called out to her that she was pretty. The woman recalled that the man introduced himself casually and “was trying to rub it in” that he was doing his residency at Tufts. Other than that, she said that he was “definitely not out of the ordinary.”

Northeastern celebrates Dr. King’s 85th birthday

On Wednesday afternoon, Northeastern students, local high school students and other admirers gathered in the Cabral Center to celebrate what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 85th birthday. This event was sponsored by the John D. O’ Bryant African-American Institute as part of the 50 Years Forward: The Journey Continues Series, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Birth of bioengineering department

A new department of bioengineering joined Northeastern’s College of Engineering last week, increasing the university’s potential to expand in the Boston biotechnology industry. Students have been able to pursue a doctorate in bioengineering before, but with the Department of Bioengineering established, students can now pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees in bioengineering. It has not been decided yet when the first students will be accepted into the new program.

Shots Fired on Tremont Street

January 16, 2014
A man was shot at a hair salon around 5:57 p.m. Tuesday near Tremont and Hammond streets, not far from the Northeastern area. According to the Boston Police Department (BPD)’s bpdnews.com, the victim was transported to the Boston Medical Center, where he was officially pronounced dead; he was in his 30s. The Northeastern University Public Safety Division (NUPD) notified the Northeastern community via email approximately an hour later, saying that the suspect fled the area.

Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian drops some knowledge on Northeastern entrepreneurs

Alexis Ohanian, cofounder of Reddit, the procrastinator’s Internet haven, addressed an audience of about 500 people at Blackman Auditorium. “A lot of people know me as the guy who has cute mascots for his startups,” he began. Ohanian came to Northeastern as part of his book tour, promoting his new novel “Without their Permission” about the innovations of the 21st century. He is a cofounder of Hipmunk and Breadpig, as well as outspoken activist for Internet freedom.
