Supporters honor Rebecca Payne with march for peace

Steps away from a brick building on Parker Hill Avenue, Virginia Payne stood in a parking lot Sunday and showed a crowd of onlookers the apartment where her daughter, Rebecca, was killed four years ago. She and Nick Payne, Rebecca’s father, gathered at 170 Parker Hill Ave. shortly before 1 p.m. with about 50 supporters on the fourth anniversary of their daughter’s death for a peace march to City Hall Plaza. Several people traveled by bus from Connecticut — where the Paynes live in New Milford — and joined supporters, young and old, from the Boston area.

Students look forward to new entrepreneurship center

Northeastern announced this week a plan for a new Center for Entrepreneurship Edu­ca­tion that will combine the university’s existing offerings with new initiatives to centralize the school’s growing entrepreneurship program. Trustee Alan S. McKim, who received his master’s in business administration from Northeastern in 1988, made a $5 mil­lion invest­ment to support the center, according to the university website. Students already involved in entrepreneurship at Northeastern praised the plan, saying it shows the school cares about the subject and that it will open up the university’s programs to more people.

University plans renovations, upgrades for summer

Construction workers will renovate and upgrade several key spaces at Northeastern this summer, including Speare Hall and the Curry Student Center. In Speare, crews will remodel restrooms and lounges and bring in new furniture, university spokeswoman Renata Nyul said in an email to The News. The dining area of CSC will see new food vendors and upgrades this summer too, Nyul said

Northeastern announces plans for satellite graduate campus in Seattle

Northeastern said Tuesday it plans to enhance its satellite campus program this September by offering graduate classes in Seattle, where the university hopes to capitalize on the Puget Sound technology sector. The Seattle branch will offer 16 graduate degree programs, according to a statement posted on the Northeastern website Tuesday. The offerings “will range from cybersecurity and computer science to health informatics and engineering.” Northeastern launched its satellite program last fall with a graduate campus in Charlotte, N.C.

Northeastern student prepping for galactic voyage

Northeastern junior Justin Dowd is ready to take the university’s global learning theme even further -- to outer space. Dowd, a physics major, won the Metro newspaper chain’s Race for Space competition for his chalk-drawn animation “Einstein’s discovery about time,” and an excursion aboard the private spacecraft Lynx, which will travel 120 kilometers above the surface of the Earth. As the initial hype dwindles, Dowd said reality is starting to set in and he is left with the question of how, exactly, a college student prepares for outer space.

Graduates urged to take risks and seek satisfying work

Northeastern’s Class of 2012 gathered for the final time as students Friday at a commencement ceremony in TD Garden led by a rousing speech from former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. The undergraduate Class of 2012 consisted of 3,200 students, according to a statement from the university.

Man charged for 2008 murder of Northeastern student Rebecca Payne

Nearly four years after Rebecca Payne was fatally shot in her Mission Hill apartment in 2008, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced an indictment Sunday charging a man with first-degree murder in her death. Cornell Smith, 30, who is now serving a 12-year prison sentence for a drug charge out of state, is accused of killing Payne in a home on Parker Hill Avenue in May 2008, Conley’s office said in a statement.

Justin Dowd is a finalist in the Metro newspaper’s Race for Space, and the grand prize is a seat on a shuttle that will soar 120 kilometers, or roughly 394,000 feet, off the surface of the Earth. Most commercial jet planes fly between 30,000 and 40,000 feet.

NU hosts Israeli US ambassador

Oren spoke for about an hour, touching on the history of the relationship between Israel and the US, Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the Iranian nuclear program and the Arab Spring. He also stressed the importance of the alliance for both Israel and America.

Fraternity Zeta Beta Tau seeks university recognition

The group of 25 Northeastern students was recognized by the national ZBT headquarters as the Zeta Beta Tau Boston-City chapter on March 22. Since then, Northeastern’s Hillel center yielded space for the fraternity’s executive board meetings, which are held on Mondays. The entire group meets in Rubin’s apartment every Thursday for educational meetings.
