Northeastern School of Law student Doug Lloyd won $12,400 on Jeopardy, the popular trivia game show. The episode aired April 9, and Lloyd went on to compete in the next show, winning $2,000 for finishing in second place. He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard and will graduate from law school next month.

Chartwells workers join Local 26 union

After almost a month of public activism, during which students and faculty held a speak-out rally as a venue for workers to voice their issues with Chartwells management, union officials announced Northeastern’s Chartwells workers voted overwhelmingly last Thursday April 12 to join the UNITE HERE Local 26 union.

Shots fired on Annunciation Road

Officer Nicole Grant, a BPD spokeswoman, said a witness reported about nine gunshots in the area. The shooter fled the scene on foot towards Ruggles Street, the witness said. No one was hurt in the shooting, but officers noticed bullet holes in a car parked at the scene.

Chartwells workers vote to unionize

Chartwells employees at Northeastern voted 299 to 44 today to join the UNITE HERE! Local 26 union, with the hopes of getting collective bargaining benefits and advocacy on their behalf, workers said.

Northeastern Chartwells employees will vote today to decide whether or not they will join the Local 26 union. Workers announced their intent to form a union March 14 in a rally, presenting the university administration with a petition signed by 293 employees – more than 72 percent of dining services workers at Northeastern. The workers held a speak out event in Behrakis on March 22, where hundreds of students came to listen to the problems workers face. The workers and Local 26 officials will count the votes tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Xhibition Kitchen at Stetson West.

No progress on YMCA dorm

Less than 18 months before its planned opening date, Northeastern officials said they have no news to report about a new dorm building announced in 2010. Under the proposal, construction was supposed to start in June 2011.

Northeastern seniors reflect, give back

More than 700 Northeastern seniors donated money for the class of 2012 senior gift drive, student drive chair Jillian Butler said. The Senior Gift Drive Committee consists of seven seniors from various colleges who are responsible for raising money for the gift drive. The committee works closely with the Alumni Relations office, which is normally tasked with fundraising for the university.

SGA elects 2012-2013 executive board officers

The Student Government Association (SGA) senate elected six members to the executive board for the upcoming school year. Senators gathered in 305 Shillman Monday night and sat down to a buffet from Boston Market before the 7 p.m. meeting.
