Northeastern’s dining hall workers will hold a Speak Out session tonight to raise awareness of their plan to form a union and advocate for fair treatment. Last Wednesday, workers and supporting students marched to deliver a petition to university administrators outlining their plan to unionize.
Sabella and Jarvis, who went with two other people who have no Northeastern affiliation, said they brought 200 pounds of shoes and clothes with them for the Acholi women to open a second-hand shop. The women paid for the goods to be shipped with money from a microloan. Sabella said the store sold over 150 pairs of shoes within three days.
The News sat down with SGA presidential and executive vice president candidates for a Q&A about their campaigns and the issues they feel strongly about.
With the Curry Student Center indoor quad as their arena, Terry MacCormack and Nick Naraghi verbally sparred Tuesday night during the Student Government Association’s (SGA) executive vice presidential debate in front of a crowd of more than 20 students, mostly SGA members.
SGA members then evaluated the referenda proposed for this year’s voting ballot on fairness, wording, feasibility and adherence to university policy. Six referenda received enough student votes to be considered and SGA voted to approve all of them to appear on the ballot. This included referenda to increase the number of recycling bins on campus and add the opt-out renewable energy fee to the “I Am Here” registration. The fee is currently an opt-in choice on the tuition e-bill.
One by one, workers came forward and told their stories. They talked about the annual fear of not getting called back to work because there is no job security, not being allowed to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water while the managers are on their cell phones or Facebook, being called “stupid” and “idiot,” and the lack of holidays, sick days, inadequate pay and scheduling.
Almost 800 students were forced out of their housing Tuesday night when power outages fell over Back Bay and left buildings on St. Stephen Street, Hemenway Street and Huntington Avenue without power. The university advised students to find a friend or fellow student in another building to stay with, but offered accommodations in the Cabot Center for displaced students as well.
Although the Student Government Association (SGA) president and executive vice president campaigns kicked off Tuesday, one presidential candidate still hasn’t received enough student signatures to be officially nominated.
