SGA elects next year’s executive board

Curry evacuated for false alarm

Curry Student Center and Ell Hall were evacuated at around 3:45 p.m. Thursday when a smoke detector was activated in Ell Hall. The Boston Fire Department (BFD) responded to the scene minutes later but found no fire, said Steve McDonald, a spokesman for the department.

During Monday’s Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, SGA President Michael Sabo announced he appealed the Finance Board’s decision to cut funding for SGA e-board members’ stipends. The decision will go before the Appeals Board and Vice President of Student Affairs Laura Wankel will make the final decision.

Philomena Mantella, senior vice president of enrollment management and academic affairs, said the university sought to “trying to achieve a modest tuition increase ... but also to continue to work on increasing financial aid for those students who have financial need, so that students who require support can not only pursue a Northeastern education but complete a Northeastern education.”

Peredna’s success in catching shoplifters comes partly from the Massachusetts Shoplifting Statute. It states that a customer does not have to leave the store’s premises as a precondition to a conviction of larceny. So long as customers conceal merchandise they do not intend to pay for, they can be prosecuted.

Elections Chair Taylor Cotter said the 3,270-vote requirement, 20 percent of the student body, was met at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, less than 10 hours before the midnight deadline. The SGA had already voted to extend the deadline on Thursday when the minimum hadn’t been met. They had to decide on Thursday so Information Services could set up the extension before the weekend. If the requirement was not met at the end of the two-day extension, the election would have been decided by the senate.

Finance board cuts SGA executive pay

SGA originally requested a total budget of $52,967 and the board released its decision Monday to allocate $23,616, with no money for stipends. Previously, 11 members of SGA received stipends. The president’s payroll was the largest, at $4,200 a year.
