Editorial: Statistics support the Northeastern model

July 17, 2013
If there is one thing that truly sets Northeastern apart from other schools, it is probably the university’s storied co-op program. For nearly the entirety of the school’s history, this innovative focus on experiential learning has come to define Northeastern, and foster countless opportunities for its students. Now, a new study is providing empirical support for giving student paid job experience.

Editorial: hike in student loan interest rates will cause a lot of damage

July 4, 2013
At this point, it is easy to ignore Congress’s chronic paralysis and subsequent failure to address any of the serious issues affecting the United States. Congress has been unable to adequately govern for years now, and thus it is easy to forget that there are real consequences to the bitterly divided legislature’s inaction. But for students at Northeastern and across the country, it will be difficult to ignore Congress’s recent failure to prevent student loan rates from doubling.

Column: Whistleblower should own up

July 4, 2013
Eight days after he arrived at Moscow Airport, National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden broke silence on Monday with a series of statements directed at the Obama administration.

Editorial: NU protest policy is harmful

June 19, 2013
As a self-described “global leader,” Northeastern should encourage this sort of behavior from students, not try to stop it. Part of global leadership is taking charge against injustice. The students in SJP were taking charge against their sense of injustice; Huskies for Israel should be free – as they have in the past – to do the same thing, as for all other such groups.

Column: Stronger than a slogan

June 19, 2013
Is “Boston Strong” still the slogan it once was, or has it become commercialized to the point that it no longer carries its original meaning?

Column: Environmentalists have nothing to worry about at Canadian Grand Prix

June 5, 2013
This year's Canadian Grand Prix is expected to run smoothly and without incident – a vast contrast to last year’s Canadian Grand Prix, which was plagued by student protest and disruption.

Editorial: when it comes to welfare abuse prevention, government should weigh all options

June 5, 2013
Late last month, Massachusetts State Auditor Suzanne Bump released a report outlining serious deficiencies in the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), which oversees the commonwealth’s welfare system.

Editorial: Smoke-free campus will be counterproductive

May 22, 2013
On a large campus in which a smoker would have to completely leave campus to have a cigarette, the inconvenience of having to do so would often outweigh the satisfaction of the cigarette. At Northeastern, if all a smoker would need to do is walk several hundred feet in any direction to the nearest public sidewalk to smoke, the cost would hardly outweigh the benefit.

Letter: Smoke-free campus is misguided

May 22, 2013
Not only do I believe that this policy will fail to eliminate cigarette smoking, I am under the impression that there are several implications of this policy that directly demonstrate some issues regarding the administration of the university.

Column: No good argument against gay marriage

May 22, 2013
In the year 2013, should 12 states out of 50 abolishing discriminatory, out-of-date laws, be considered a victory? Or an embarrassment?

Editorial: Don’t sacrifice values for revenge

May 8, 2013
Now, as we begin to put the pieces together, search for answers and bring those responsible to justice, it is important not to lose sight of our principles and risk sacrificing all we have accomplished as a people since Patriots Day.

Letter: Professor Levin’s speculations were unfair

May 8, 2013
On April 18, The News’s headline read “Unity Over Anguish,” and no doubt Boston residents felt both emotions in the wake of the terrorist acts perpetrated in the heart of our city. Unfortunately, The News’s interview with Professor Jack Levin on the bombings was less-than-unifying in nature.
