As musical director for the Nor’easters, Shams Ahmed helped guide the a capella group through their most successful year to date. The group placed second at the Northeast quarterfinals for the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) at Boston University in February and continued onto semifinals at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in March, where they were ranked fourth out of eight groups.
So there’s this boy… Actually, I lied. There are four of them. They’re the Lennon boys: Kipp, Mark, Michael and Pat. They can sing, play guitar and make many a girl swoon. I know them affectionately as Venice, a small-time band from Venice Beach, Calif. whose CDs serve as a playlist to my life.

Political cartoons can make us laugh at the missteps of our government, but they can also cause controversy. Editorial cartoonists have long come under fire for insulting cultural beliefs and crossing the boundaries of what’s deemed acceptable. That’s why 86 editorial cartoons will be on display at Gallery 360 from April 12 through May 12; and on April 14, six editorial cartoonists participated in a symposium at Blackman Auditorium to discuss their work.

Event of the Week - Run, Boston, Run: Lest you forget and wonder why the city seems to be completely shut down when you leave your apartment or dorm Monday morning, it’s marathon time again in Boston! Runners from around the globe will be competing in one of the world’s most prestigious marathons, running some 26 miles between Hopkinton and Boston.

Approximately 200 people filled afterHOURS last night to see DAM, the first ever Palestinian hip-hop group, sing controversial songs in order to raise awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people. DAM stands for “Da Arabian MC’s” and is Arabic for “to last forever” or “eternity.” The group – which raps in Arabic, Hebrew and English – gave the crowd a dose of songs in all three languages. Despite being of Palestinian decent, the group hails from Lyddia, Israel and its members were raised in a mixed Arab and Jewish community and have Israeli-citizenship.
During a practice on Boylston Street Monday evening, it was clear that the four present members Sun Cut Flat are comfortable being close – at least physically.
Event of the Week - Sex and Showtunes: Northeastern’s musical theater group The Great White Way is pulling an impressive array of showtunes out of its pocket for its third full-length revue. The theme? “The Battle of the Sexes,” with about 50 cast members performing 24 numbers from classic Broadway tunes to retro pop, and more current stage hits, all focusing on that whole kind of men-are-from-mars as women-are-from-venus deal.
