Harvard Square celebrates Bastille Day

July 20, 2010
Bastille Day marks the start of the French Revolution and the origin of modern France. Harvard Square hosted a block party in its honor on July 11 where revelers -- some French, but mostly not -- had the opportunity to celebrate.

Interview: Passion Pit’s Hultquist and Donmoyer talk about the band’s origins

July 20, 2010
Passion Pit may seem like a household name among college students today, but just a few years ago, the members of the band known for songs like “Sleepyhead” and “Little Secrets” were college students in Boston themselves. Four of the five members are graduates of the Berklee College of Music: Ayad Al Adhamy (synthesizer), Jeff Apruzzese (bass/synth bass), Ian Hultquist (guitar/keyboards) and Nate Donmoyer (drums). The lead singer and keyboardist, Michael Angelakos, attended Emerson College. Passion Pit’s hallmark is electronic pop music with organs, guitars, and piano added in.

Movie review: Nolan dreams up a winner with “Inception”

July 20, 2010

By Andrew Judd, News Correspondent To say that Christopher Nolan, the director of such films as “Memento,” “The Prestige” and “The Dark Knight,” has a unique style is an understatement. His latest film, “Inception,” practically oozes his trademark finesse....

Concert review: She & Him bring folksy fun to the House of Blues

July 6, 2010
Any fan of the 2003 Christmas comedy film “Elf” is sure to have already been taken with Zooey Deschanel’s simple charm and playful appeal as the bashful romantic interest, Jovie. Not only was her lively acting ability obvious in the film, but detail-oriented viewers and listeners may have noticed that she had quite the singing voice.

Mountain Dew announces Green Label Art Series

July 6, 2010
Art isn’t just for galleries anymore. Mountain Dew’s Green Label Art campaign has been creating limited edition works of art on bottles and cans since 2007, and last week in Boston, the company announced that this year they’re adding something new. The soft drink maker, owned by PepsiCo, has been an active supporter of extreme sports, skateboarding in particular. It sponsors star athletes and festivals including their own namesake festival, The Dew Tour, which combines a concert and a skateboarding competition which travel to cities around the country. The Dew Tour made its way to Boston’s TD Garden June 25, where Mountain Dew’s signature professional skateboarder, Paul “P-Rod” Rodriguez, competed and made a special announcement.

For local music label, small is beautiful

June 26, 2010
In a recent interview, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke said that "it's simply a matter of time - months rather than years - before the music business establishment completely folds." And when it does, he said, "it will be no great loss to the world." It is this seemingly bleak view of the music industry that motivates small Do-It-Yourself record labels like Boston-based F Nice Records.

Rocking out, camping atop Hunter Mountain

June 8, 2010
The upstate New York music festival Mountain Jam isn’t exactly Woodstock — but it’s getting close. Just a few miles away from the location of Woodstock, the quintessential music festival, Mountain Jam carried an eerily similar vibe from June 4 to 6. Now in its sixth year, the music festival made leaps and bounds with its jam-band heavy, hipster-friendly lineup. And while the festival doesn’t have the name recognition of some of its contemporaries, it's still a major draw, and many made the trip to attend the three-day event.

Counterfeit (and funny) Twitter accounts you should follow

June 8, 2010
Twitter is a great way for celebrities and companies to keep in touch with the public. Unfortunately for them, impostor satirists and parodists think so too. Armed with a sense of humor and Twitter accounts that resemble their real counterparts’, these online carnival mirrors distort the original message in a hilariously inappropriate fashion.

Music review: ‘This Is Good’ is great

June 8, 2010

By Andrew Judd, News Correspondent You probably haven’t heard of Hannah Georgas. I don’t say that to give off the “indier-than-thou” vibe of musical superiority but because she’s a veritable phantom of a musician. Her debut record, This is Good, was released...
