Over the last few weeks, Northeastern hockey fans have had the privilege of watching the latest Husky to make it to the NHL: Matt Benning. The newest Edmonton Oilers defenseman joins NU alums Josh Manson, Anthony Bitetto, Joe Vitale and Jamie Oleksiak as the only ex-Huskies currently on NHL rosters. Though Vitale will be out for the year with a concussion and Bitetto and Oleksiak are in and out of their respective lineups, Manson and Benning have earned their stays in the NHL.

When the Boston Red Sox won the 2004 World Series title, baseball history was made. It was their first championship since 1918, ending an unbearable 86-year drought. The elder members of the Red Sox faithful saw their lifelong dreams come true when Edgar Renteria grounded to Keith Foulke and he flipped the ball to Doug Mientkiewicz at first base, recording the game’s final out and ending The Curse of the Bambino.
What makes a sportswriter great? I would argue that it’s foresight: The ability to gauge and perceive the next big things in sports. This skill isn’t easily achievable, and requires a lot of studying, as predictions are typically based on a mixture of noticed patterns and gut feelings.
