As the ball rocketed off junior Mike Bivas’ bat and middler Adam Morgan sprinted for home plate, 20 black jerseys mobbed the field in celebration of a national championship.
The men’s hockey team will welcome 10 new freshmen to the roster. Five forwards, four defensemen and one goaltender make up the new class of Huskies who will take to the ice in the fall.

The breeze still stirs the trees, the gravel parking lot still crunches when cars enter and leave, but the relative peace of Parsons Field has been interrupted of late by bulldozers and other heavy machinery. Crews have been ripping up the old (and I mean old) artificial turf before laying down a new surface in time for the fall season.
In the last month of the ill-fated 2010 baseball season, sophomore first baseman Matt Miller consistently produced for the baseball team, going 17-55 (.309), scoring 13 runs and driving in six runs. Miller led the team with a .320 batting average this season, and scored 36 runs while driving in 18. His efforts have earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
It's no question the biggest news surrounding Northeastern sports in the past year was the elimination of the football program in November. Now that the program is done, the Athletic Department needs to make some changes to programs that still exist.

The baseball team played its final three games of what can be considered one of the least successful seasons of head coach Neil McPhee’s 25-year tenure, perhaps even in the program’s 89 years. Head coach Neil McPhee called the season “extremely frustrating, and very surprising.”
The baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak after taking two games from conference foe Old Dominion at Friedman Diamond this weekend. The Huskies then dropped an 8-3 contest at Maine yesterday, bringing the team's record to 11-26 on the season, and 4-14 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The squad is last out of 11 teams in the conference and is out of playoff contention.
Junior long jumper Andrew Staples took first place at the New England Championships with a jump of 24 feet, 2.5 inches Saturday. His victory was the first time Northeastern claimed the long jump title at the New England Championships since 2004. Staples’ efforts have earned him Huntington News Player of Week honors.

Your new Huntington News sports columnist here. You probably know me as one of the many voices on WRBB radio, but I’m not here to be an objective play-by-play man. Let’s make this clear up front: This is a newspaper column, and will be treated as such. With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive right into it.
Northeastern men’s basketball head coach Bill Coen inked a significant contract extension two weeks ago. You know the details by now: Signed through 2016, he and his assistants got raises, and the program got a boost in recruiting resources. But the news meant so much more than a simple extension or more money.
Men’s basketball head coach Bill Coen has found a permanent home in Boston, and it’s on Huntington Avenue. Athletics Director Peter Roby announced May 3 that Coen signed a six year contract extension which runs through the 2015-16 season. Exact terms of the contract were not disclosed.
With dominant pitching and an abundance of offense, the baseball team hauled itself out of a tumultuous slide this weekend, winning two out of three games against conference foe UNC–Wilmington. The Huskies improved to 2-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 9-19 on the season after losing 15 out of 16 games since March 20.
The home of the Huskies reached the century mark.
Matthews Arena, the world’s oldest multi-purpose athletic facility, turned 100 years old Friday.
Matthews currently serves as the primary home of the men’s and women’s hockey teams, as well as the men’s basketball team. The women’s basketball team also occasionally plays there, and many of the athletics staff’s main offices are located there as well.
The building, known as Boston Arena for its first 72 years of existence, opened its doors to the public April 16, 1910. Brochures passed out at the opening described the building as “the most complete home of sport in America – the largest, most complete and most elaborate temple erected for the devotees of sport in the world.”
