Men’s hockey: Rawlings earns rookie honor

During the 2008-09 men’s hockey season, goaltender Brad Thiessen played every minute of every game for the Huskies. He was eventually named an All-American, Hobey Baker Finalist, and the Hockey East Player of the Year. So when Thiessen signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins days after Northeastern’s season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, it immediately meant change for the Huskies.

Senior spotlight: Carr, Walton leave lasting hoops impact

The 2009-10 season was improving for the women’s basketball team as it finished eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and got to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The driving force behind this team was the play of senior captains and forwards Kendra Walton and Kim Carr. They led the Huskies, who finished the season 13-18 overall with a 7-11 record in conference play.

Club sports spotlight: Women’s club hockey win’s national title

The Northeastern women’s club ice hockey team won the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 2 National Championship March 14, 2010 at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., with an 8-1 victory over Rainy River Community College. The title capped off a perfect season for the squad, which went 28-0-0.

Player of the Week: Andrew Leenhouts

Perhaps more painful for the baseball team than two walk-off losses in one day: The blow to the head sophomore pitcher Andrew Leenhouts suffered in the ninth inning of Game Two in Richmond, Va. Despite the injury Leenhouts stayed in the game and surrendered only two runs in 8.1 innings total in the 5-4 loss to conference foe Virginia Commonwealth. Leenhouts struck out nine, bringing his season total to a team-high 26. His efforts earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Baseball: NU goes two up, two down over weekend

It was an up-and-down weekend for the baseball team, which suffered back-to-back losses to Bryant and Connecticut, after taking two from Bryant first. The first victory of the weekend came Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond, as junior righthander Les Williams led the way in a 10-0 victory. The Toronto native nearly tossed a no-hitter, contributing eight innings of shutout baseball and surrendering one hit on the day. “It’s as good a game as he’s pitched here,” head coach Neil McPhee said. “He [Williams] was ahead on 18 out of 21 batters and that was the key. He put the hitters in a defensive mode and it’s so easy to get hitters out when you’re ahead in the count.”

Senior spotlight: Rebello led women’s soccer to new heights

The women’s soccer team opened up its season at Parsons Field Aug. 28 against Longwood sporting a roster with just one senior to its credit. Despite that, the Huskies went 12-4-3 and managed a 7-1-3 record in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) en route to a regular season title in the conference. Carrying that load all year, and ushering in a set of underclassmen that went 20 players deep as the lone elder statesman was captain and forward Liza Rebello. Rebello played four full seasons for the Huskies from 2006-09, amassing 25 career goals and eight assists for a team that, during her tenure, became a force in the CAA. The effort in her four years also made her the team’s second all-time leading scorer with 56 points.

Club sports spotlight: Triathlon team quickly gaining popularity

Michael Abbene, president of the club triathlon team, can recall his introduction to the sport of triathlons. “As of two years ago I had never completed a triathlon, or even had the desire to complete one in the near future,” Abbene said. “Then one day one of my best friends, Jess Bloom, came to me and asked me if I wanted to try and train to do one with her. Since I never ran more than a couple miles in my life and did not know how to swim properly I was very hesitant, but after much deliberation, I agreed.”

Player of the Week: Tony DiCesare

Senior right fielder Tony DiCesare led the baseball team to back-to-back victories over Bryant this weekend, logging six hits and five runs batted in (RBI) in 12 at-bats in the three-game series, in which the Huskies took two of three. DiCesare also drove in the lone run for the Huskies in Monday’s 12-1 loss to Connecticut, his sixth RBI in four games. His efforts earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors. Friday afternoon, DiCesare was just one hit shy of the cycle. Finishing with a pair of singles, a double and a triple, he also drove in three runs en route to a 10-0 victory for the Huskies. He added a single and two RBI in Saturday’s game, a 7-4 victory for the squad. Sunday afternoon, he went 1-3 with a walk, as the Huskies fell to the Bulldogs, 16-4.

fter the men's basketball team's first-round NIT loss in Connecticut, I reflected on the end of my experience as an undergraduate supporter of our athletic program. Neither of the teams to which I have devoted the most time (men’s basketball and hockey) will play again before I graduate. As I rode back to Boston from Storrs, Conn. it seemed unlikely that I would have another opportunity to watch the Huskies compete during my tenure as a Northeastern student.

Player of the Week: Saleena Abdur-Rashed

Sophomore track & field athlete Saleena Abdur-Rashed claimed first place in two events this past weekend at the Seahawk Invitational to help Northeastern take a third place finish in Wilmington, N.C. Abdur-Rashed came out on top in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.67, which was an NCAA provisional qualifying time. She also took the 400-meter hurdle, with a time of 1:05.65. Her efforts were enough to earn Huntington News Player of the Week honors. Despite kicking off the outdoor season with two victories, Abdur-Rashed said she feels there is still work left for her to do.

Swimming & diving: Peterson competes at Zone Championship

While many students spent Spring Break on tropical vacations, relaxing at home and hanging with friends, sophomore diver Rachael Peterson spent hers in Barletta Natatorium, training for the NCAA Zone Championships, which took place Saturday at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. Peterson qualified for Zones Jan. 23 after winning the 1-meter dive against Vermont. Diving coach Casey Gon said Peterson’s commitment is one of her many outstanding qualities.
