Column: The men’s soccer team has been having a season that gives most fans heart attacks. All but two of its eight games have been decided by one goal or less, with five of those going to double overtime. They make it impossible to know the result of the game until the final whistle.
Northeastern (5-1-1) overcame its worst start to a game so far in 2012 when senior forward Don Anding scored three goals as the Huskies blew out the College of the Holy Cross, 5-2, Tuesday night to remain undefeated on their home turf (3-0-0) in 2012.
Thanks to men’s soccer sophomore defender Simon Cox’s tying goal, with less than three seconds left in last weekend’s game at the College of William & Mary, the Huskies were able to keep afloat to a 1-1 draw in their Colonial Athletic Association opening game.
The Huskies were deadlocked in a scoreless tie with Fairfield University, caught in a double-overtime game for the third time in their first five matches. It was familiar territory for the red and black, whose first two extra-time games – the season-opener Aug. 24 against Providence College and Aug. 28 at Marist College – both resulted in wins.
As the Crimson (0-1-1) carried the ball over midfield, Anding fell to the ground and pounded the field in frustration – evidence of the fierce competitive spirit that has motivated him to be so successful early in the 2012 season.
Despite outshooting No. 11 William & Mary 16-10 and having a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks, the men’s soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime Saturday on Senior Day at Parsons Field.
The men’s soccer team’s 1-0 double overtime loss to Old Dominion University (ODU) last Saturday summed up its entire season as the Huskies topped their opponent in shots on goal, but came up short after ODU forward Daniel Lidster scored in the 105th minute.
The Huskies dropped to 3-4-3 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play and 5-8-3 on the season, and their playoff hopes are in jeopardy.
