Northeastern and Florida Democrat officials have confirmed that the university will hold a party for the sunshine state’s delegates on Sunday, July 25, just a day before the Democratic National Convention convenes at the FleetCenter in Boston’s North End.
Though both organizations verified the event, each stressed that no formal agreements had been reach-ed in terms of funding, location on campus and who will cater the event.
“Florida is a great delegation to have on campus,” said Jeff Doggett, Northeastern’s associate director of community affairs. “For the reasons of what happened in 2000, it’s a battleground state between Democrats and Republicans.”
The Florida delegation’s party at Northeastern comes under Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s March 15 announ-cement to disperse the delegations throughout cultural icons of the Boston community, opposed to traditional banquet halls at downtown hotels.
In accordance, other state delegations have planned similar parties at museums, libraries and educational institutions throughout the city and its many facets.
Doggett said funding for the event has not yet occurred, but talks between Northeastern, the Florida Democrats and Boston 2004 – the organization coordinating most convention plans in the city – will take place in the coming weeks to determine who will pay.
“This is all to be worked out in the next several weeks,” Doggett said. “Everything is all to be determined.”
