High class guest list for Emily’s List
Democratic women voters gathered at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center Tuesday for “Women’s Voices Say Enough,” a luncheon sponsored by the pro-choice political network, Emily’s List. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm spoke in support of the John Kerry campaign and the campaigns of several female democrats running for office in November. “Today we launch a special fight,” said Ellen Malcolm, founder of Emily’s List. “It’s time for us to unleash the power of women.” Emily’s List, comprised of over 90,000 voters, has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice democratic women to federal, state and local office since its founding in 1985.
McGovern speaks about book at forum
More than 30 years after taking the stage to accept the democratic nomination for president in 1972, former Sen. George McGovern once again took the stage during convention week. This time, he highlighted his views on the future of the country and his new book. As part of the Northeastern-sponsored Ford Hall Forum lecture series, McGovern spoke at the Old South Meeting House Tuesday before signing copies of his ninth book, “The Essential America: Our Liberal Tradition.” The former presidential candidate also spoke about his opinion of the 2004 democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry and the need for opposing views in the United States. “Our system works best when we have a good conservative tradition and a good liberal tradition,” he said. Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, also a former democratic presidential nominee, moderated the discussion.
Sorority holds banquet for DNC**
The national Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority held a banquet Tuesday for former sisters visiting Boston for the Democratic National Convention. The event was a collaboration between Northeastern’s undergraduate chapter, Iota Gamma, and its graduate chapter, Psi Omega. Northeastern was chosen to host the event because it has an AKA chapter on campus and for its pleasing aesthetics, sister Sonia Higginbottom said. In addition to undergraduate sorority members, there were several Northeastern graduate sorority members in attendance for the event, including Paula Hamilton, a former broadcast journalism student from the class of 1979. “There are so many new buildings and wonderful things done for this school,” Hamilton said. “I’m proud of the work they’ve done and I’m glad to be back.”
Documentary ‘Outfoxed’ raises eyebrows
Ticket holders streamed through the door of the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square Tuesday night, in anticipation of a special screening of “Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism.” The film, by director/producer Robert Greenwald, examines how media ownership influences the partisanship of certain news outlets, specifically, Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News. An additional 10 p.m. screening was added as the demand for tickets increased. Special promotional offers were given away after the film, including subscriptions to magazines and gift totes with a copy of the film. The film is being screened in various cities across the country. Showings are no longer in Boston. For more information on the film and to inquire about screenings, check out www.outfoxed.org.
