He’s one point away from breaking his personal best single season point total, and now he’s a finalist for the Walter Brown Award.
Husky captain Jason Guerriero continues to fill his senior year with strong personal achievements. The center was nominated for the Walter Brown Award yesterday, given annually to the outstanding American-born college hockey player in New England.
“There are a lot of good players that have won this award and I’m proud to just be a part of it,” Guerriero said. “It’s up for grabs, I know the players that have been nominated all work hard and strive to be leaders.”
Guerriero currently has 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points in 28 games, which ties his total during both his freshman and junior seasons and is good for fourth in Hockey East and 14th in the nation.
“I know great names have won it in the past like Brian Gionta and Chris Drury, and it’s definitely great personally to be recognized,” he said.
Among Guerriero’s Beanpot competition, Harvard goalie Dov Grumet-Morris, defenseman Noah Welch and forward Tom Cavanagh were also nominated. Boston College’s Ryan Shannon, Patrick Eaves and Andrew Alberts were nominated along with Boston University’s John Curry.
Reading native and former University of New Hampshire forward Steve Saviano was the winner last year.
Jim Fahey was the last Husky to receive the honor in 2002. The award is the oldest nationally-recognized honor given to players in American college hockey. It was established in 1953, when members of the 1933 world champion U.S. national team were honored at their 20th reunion.
Criteria for the selection committee includes leadership, character, sportsmanship and ability, along with on-ice achievement.
