For Northeastern goalie Keni Gibson and his teammates, Saturday’s win over Providence College was a mistake-free night. Thus, the quick four-goal lead and eventual 6-0 victory.
Gibson, in his fourth and final year between the pipes for the Huskies, recorded his first shutout of the year and the seventh of his career. His workman-like performance was aided noticeably by veteran defenseman Tim Judy and from the offensive side as well, including a memorable stop by forward Jared Mudryk.
Gibson, who played in his 100th game as a Husky, has been named The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
“I think Tim Judy has just as many saves as I did,” said Gibson, who finished with 21 on the night, including 10 in the first period. “All of the defense played very well. There were very little mistakes, and it’s why we came out on top.”
Gibson’s shutout came at an important time for Northeastern, having tied eighth-place Providence the night before and having lost six of their last nine.
“It’s nice to win, and especially to get those three points in Hockey East,” Gibson said. “To take five from Providence is big.”
The netminder faced some unusual scenarios during the night, including a Mudryk stop of a 2-on-1 from PC. Mudryk, who played the point on the penalty kill play for the Huskies, added to the balanced effort for NU, starting with Gibson’s play in net.
“That 2-on-1 that Muddy stopped, it was a phenomenal play,” Gibson said, calling it the most memorable of the night. “There were so many firsts for us, including Jason Blain getting his first point. It’s not too often you get six goals, and to be a part of it was great. There were some highlight goals for us.”
Gibson seems to be ending his Husky career on the right note. Already with a Hockey East Goalie of the Month honor (November), his play has been instrumental for a Husky team looking to get back into the Hockey East tournament once March approaches.
“Career-wise for me, it’s been up and down,” he said. “Sophomore year was really tough, but we have a good group of guys. They’re working hard every year and we know we’re a good team. Saturday was a really positive game, and we want to keep getting better.”
Gibson recorded 51 saves on 55 shots in 3-1 and 2-1 losses to Boston University and University of Massachusetts-Lowell, respectively. Both were tough losses that may have overshadowed the goalie’s work.
“Every Hockey East point, especially now, is so important,” Gibson said.
