Recent trends have introduced a re-vamp of 1970s styles including an array of neons, sheen, studded pieces, cut-off jeans, intricate eyewear and the ever questionable, megging. The man-legging? I questioned it myself.
Being one who is fearless when it comes to my wardrobe (when I have the time) I decided to take a shot and dip into this new trend before it trickles down into some casual corner where someone will fish it out of a clearance bin. My end result was mainly positive; if designed properly, the potential market could be huge. One thing that all men need is space, as in pockets and room for … well … you get the point. No one enjoys being in any sort of pain when it comes to clothing, especially guys.
I began my hunt for the megging, searching my usual low-key Boston boutiques and chain stores like Zara, H&M and websites such as Karmaloop, River Island and Asos.com (a personal favorite.) All of which, had an array of slimmer fitting pants, until I finally decided on a galaxy-print megging from Urban Outfitters which fit comfortably, and looked completely different from anything I have ever worn before. Paired with my Allsaints high tops, vintage White Stripes tee, and aviator Ray Bans, I was ready for my commute (a ten-minute strut from Fenway) to classes. The reactions from people were insane; I received more compliments than I ever have prior to my megging days, between the gasping and the constant staring … I felt a rush of excitement knowing that my meggings were making a splash among fellow students.
What I enjoy most about the trend is its versatility; you can practically wear them with anything to create a different look each time, while still keeping being comfortable and accessibility in mind. Now, if you’re not a lean 6’3” guy like myself, but still want to give meggings a shot, I suggest going with a looser fit and something in a flattering color pattern, maybe even play it safe with a dark solid or perhaps try a skinnier jean, which has made a comeback into men’s fashion over the past few years; try anything you are comfortable with, but please, for the sake of fashion, stay away from boot-cut jeans, they do no good.
I can’t say that I am completely sold on meggings, but I’m definitely not turned off by the idea either. Give the trend a shot, I promise you won’t look as ridiculous as Justin Bieber, poor guy.
