The Huskies beat UVM in a league game on Friday, 3-2. Northeastern had a 3-0 lead, but a late penalty opened the door to two late Catamount goals.
Saturday’s game was a non-league game against UVM. The Catamounts scored four goals in the third period and won 4-1.
Northeastern had a power play with 8:30 left in the first period. Roy fired a shot that bounced off the glass, and gave UVM a 2 on 1 rush. Witt made the save.
The Huskies had a 4 on 3 power play opportunity with five minutes left in the first period. Szmatula and Stevens worked the puck along the left post and passed it to Roy on the right post. Mike Santaguida made the save.
UVM nearly took a 1-0 lead with 17:30 in the second period when Witt went behind the net to play a puck. He didn’t pass it far enough, and a UVM skater got the puck, threw it to the front of the net, where a teammate one timed it. Witt got back in front of the net and made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
The Huskies scored their first goal of the game with 2:29 left in the second period. Sophomore Mike Gunn sent the puck to the net from the blue line. Freshman Dalen Hedges crashed the net from the right side and shot the puck. Santaguida made the initial save, but Hedges knocked the rebound in.
The Catamounts tied the game 15 seconds into the third period. Chris McCarthy took a puck from the blue line to the right post. The Northeastern defense went with him, so he passed to Mario Puskarich on the left side, who knocked it in.
UVM struck again two minutes later when UVM had a 2 on 1 opportunity. Tom Forgione went down the left side and shot to beat Witt stick side. The 2-1 lead was their first of the game.
The Catamounts went on the power play 30 seconds later. Michael Paliotta took a slap shot from the blue line and Witt made the initial save. The puck bounced out of his pads and Chris McCarthy came to the left post, took the puck, and put it in behind Witt.
“What’s most disappointing is we talked about two areas where we have to take care of pucks,” said Northeastern coach Jim Madigan. “Always five feet within our blue line and five feet inside the offensive blue line. Those first two goals were inside those spaces. We had bad puck shooting, we made bad puck decisions, we didn’t manage pucks well in the neutral zone and they took advantage of us.”
The Huskies had a chance to make it a one goal game six minutes into the third period when junior Josh Manson took a slap shot from the blue line with freshman Mike Jamieson in front, but Santaguida made the save.
Sophomore Kevin Roy had an opportunity to score when he was in the offensive zone. He cut around a defender to the left and shot, but Santaguida made the save.
McCarthy scored an empty net game with 30 seconds left to give UVM a 4-1 win.
