In a green, sequined mini-dress, drag queen Destiny straddled sophomore Kat Palermino, unbuttoned her shirt, and licked her chest.
“It was so hot,” the music industry major said.
The fourth annual Drag Show held by the Northeastern University Bisexual Lesbian and Gay Alliance (NUBiLAGA) took place last night at afterHOURS in front of a crowd of about 100 students, said Josh Hamlin, the club’s assistant manager.
“It was a very energetic crowd, and people had a good time,” he said.
NUBiLAGA public relations officer Kristen Brodsky called the event “wonderfully amazing and amusing.” The night’s aim was to entertain, she said.
“It’s for students to enjoy something they aren’t normally exposed to,” she said.
The show featured drag queens from the nightclub Axis performing songs by artists including Mariah Carey and The Pussycat Dolls. The queens also answered audience questions and raised a few of their own.
“The performers are awesome,” Brodsky said. “Everyone loves coming to see them.”
With an enormous afro and rhinestone sunglasses, Mahogany Brown belted out a slow song before strutting around the audience, saying, “Excuse me, someone stole my glasses.”
Lisa Newcar opened the show with a dose of Latin flavor, and Miss Kris served as comic relief while MC-ing. But it was Destiny that stole the show, said middler pharmacy major DanielaGurian.
“She was beautiful as always,” she said.
NUBiLAGA president Ashley Smith, a psychology and music literature major, deemed the night a success.
“Considering the weather, the turnout was great,” she said. The original show in 2001 included a student and member of NUBiLAGA performing in the show, but he has since graduated. However, the event has caught on and is becoming a tradition said Brodsky, a sophomore chemistry major.
“It wouldn’t feel right without having a drag show at Northeastern,” Gurian said. “I’ve seen every drag show here. I know it’ll always be a good time.”
In the latest issue of Boston Magazine, three of the performers, Mahogany Brown, Destiny and Miss Kris, were named among the 40 Most Fabulous People in Boston.
“I just feel like a fat man in a dress,” said Miss Kris. “But if they want to call me fabulous, then go for it.”
NUBiLAGA will host another event in the McLeod Suites of the Curry Student Center tomorrow titled “Guess Who’s Gay,” in which the audience will try to determine the sexual orientation of panelists through a format similar to the game show “To Tell the Truth.”
