With only one game left in the season, the men’s soccer team is still fighting for a spot in the playoffs. However, after two losses to James Madison (JMU) and Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) last weekend, the Huskies will need a win against Hofstra and a little luck to sneak into post season.
The Huskies lost in overtime to JMU 2-1 and was outshot 16 to two. The Dukes scored less than two minutes into the game. The Huskies evened the score in the second half with a goal by senior Jay Betley. Betley nailed a 16-yard shot in to the top left corner of the goal, forcing the game into overtime.
JMU managed only one shot in overtime, but they were able to put it in the net in the 94th minute to win the game.
Sophomore Greg Kilkenny registered NU’s only other shot and senior goalie Sergio Saccoccio had seven saves on the day.
Against VCU the Huskies managed two shots, both of which went high in the first half. The game went scoreless until the 49th minute, when VCU scored on a shot five yards out.
NU took three shots after allowing the goal but were unable to score. Saccoccio added four saves to his season total.
The Huskies play their final regular season game on the road Friday at 5 p.m. against Hofstra.
