The Big Apple is the perfect place for those who prefer a more sophisticated spring break escape, and it is close enough to Boston that even students on co-op can get away for a weekend. From Broadway to Canal Street to museums and art galleries, there is something for everyone in the city that never sleeps.
‘Sex and the City’ Tour
For those who watch countless reruns of Sex and the City on TBS or own every season on DVD, there is the Sex and the City Tour. Shop at the Jimmy Choo Boutique where Carrie buys her shoes, drink a Cosmopolitan at Steve and Adain’s bar, buy a cupcake at the bakery where Miranda stuffed her face, go to the art gallery in SoHo where Charlotte worked and see where the girls exercised. Even for those who are not fans of the show, the tour is a good way to see the city in a new way. There are over 35 locations on the tour and it lasts three hours. Prices start at $37 per person.
Lower East Side Rocks
Rock, punk or glam aficionados can take advantage of the Rock Junket – New York City’s Original Rock n’ Roll Walking Tour. For $25 a person, tourists can experience the sights and stories of The Ramones, New York Dolls, Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground, Madonna, Led Zeppelin and more.
See where they performed, shopped and lived. The tour is a great exposure to the rich musical history of the Lower East Side.
Theatre and Times Square
Broadway is another stop unique to New York. The Producers, Spamalot, Rent, Avenue Q, Hairspray, Wicked, Beauty and the Beast and Mamma Mia are among the current shows playing. Matinees are cheaper and the TKTS booth in the middle of Times Square sells tickets at a reduced cost, sometimes up to 50 percent cheaper than Ticketmaster. Although the line is usually long, it moves quickly and can save theatre goers a lot of money.
Bus Tour
Double Decker Tours are a classic way to see the city. Tourists can get on or off as they please and spend as much or as little time as they want at each location. There are day and night tours as well as a 48-hour loop tour, which costs $50.
New York City is only a four- hour bus or car ride away and the Fung Wah bus costs $30 roundtrip. Although confusing at times, the subway is readily accessible and cheap. Traffic can be a downfall, so upon arrival driving around is not recommended.
