Why not waste away in Margaritaville this spring break?
Key West, Fla., the inspiration for many Jimmy Buffet songs, is known for its laid back attitude and easygoing population, according to www.pubclub.com.
During the day, visitors can relax on the beach, play volleyball or go scuba diving.
“[There are] a lot of nice clean beaches filled with a lot of Floridian women,” said Josh Salmon, a freshman physical therapy major. “And get a chance to get some beach tanning in, soaking up the sun during the day and Catamaran parties in the afternoon. [It’s the] second best thing to going to the Caribbean or Hawaii.”
For those feeling a bit on the wild side, a trip to Higgs Beach or Tank Island might be in order, since both beaches have been known to be clothing optional.
Students who want to keep their clothes on and still go a little wild should book a tour to swim with the dolphins and see the coral reefs through the floor of a glass-bottomed boat. Some of these boats are air conditioned and several evening tours even serve champagne aboard.
A popular destination for those looking to escape the heat are Key West’s infamous bars. Happy Hour is usually from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and offer a discount on drinks during this time.
As dinnertime approaches, head out to one of the many popular restaurants on the island, like Shula’s on the Beach, run by former Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula and his father. No need to worry about going back to the hotel to change for dinner: there is no dress code on the island.
Other popular stops include the A’B Lobster House and Benihana Steaks and Seafood, where dinner is cooked in front of customers. As an added bonus, both establishments offer great views of the ocean and sunset.
After dinner get ready for a night on the town, because Key West has an exuberant night life.
Many of the bars have an old time nautical feel about them, reflecting Key West’s maritime history. Jimmy Buffet became famous by playing in Key West for several years in the 1970s. Although Buffet no longer lives there, he still makes appearances from time to time at his Margaritaville Caf
