The Central Flea is a colorful open-air flea market that takes place on the last Sunday of every month at Central Square in Cambridge.
“It is a fun, upbeat atmosphere, a lot of really nice people,” said Lisa Lotruglio, owner of Bella and Harvey Boutique Bakery, one of the vendors. “Great day, great food. It is awesome.”
Every month at the flea market, artists, designers, crafters, chefs and bakers participate as vendors to present their creations and wares. Some of the goods include art, antique or vintage artifacts, handmade crafts, local food, beauty products and jewelry.
One of the Sunday vendors was We’re Into It, a greeting card and prints company created by Amelia Rossi and Natasha Taylor, two Northeastern University alumni. The college best friends founded the business nearly two years ago, and this was their second time participating in this flea market.
“The holiday season right before Christmas is my favorite season to sell” Taylor said.
The flea market also offers entertainment for the public, including live music, and special events like Sunday’s Dumpling Festival.
“The most interesting thing that has happened today was definitely the parade,” said Katie Collings, a vendor in the flea market who sells all-natural dog treats.
The Dumpling Festival honored famous Chinese-American chef Joyce Chen. Chen popularized traditional Chinese food and introduced Americans to traditional Chinese dumplings. Fifteen local restaurants and food trucks joined the event to sell their best dumplings, including Hong Kong Restaurant, Bao Nation and Dumpling Palace.
Central Flea organizers use social media to attract both vendors and visitors. As a result, vendors obtain a lot of exposure by participating in these flea markets.
“I love getting feedback from people,” said Maeve Mueller, a porcelain and gold jewelry designer. “Seeing people pick up the pieces and saying things that maybe I did not notice before is very valuable.”
