Every year a select few people are cemented into Beanpot lore with inductions into the Beanpot Hall of Fame. This year one of the staples of Northeastern’s Beanpot-winning 1984 and 1985 teams will be among those added to the tournament’s hall.
Defenseman and 1985 captain Jim Averill, a member of the class of 1986, was inducted Monday at the TD Banknorth Garden in a ceremony between the first and second semifinal games.
“There’s a lot of great players who have been inducted and will be inducted,” Averill said, “so it’s a great honor for myself, my family and, of course, for the Northeastern University family.”
Jim Averill became the first member of his family, which has a long history at Northeastern, to be inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame. Between himself, his older brother Bob (class of ’85), his younger brother Will (’92) and his father Bob (’57), the Averills have participated in a total of 14 Beanpots.
Averill joined Boston University goalie Dan Brady (class of ’72) and the late Bill Flynn, who served as athletic director at Boston College from 1957-91 as the 2008 inductees. In joining the hall, Averill becomes the 11th Northeastern inductee. There are 45 total members in the hall.
Averill first appeared in the Beanpot in 1982, when NU lost to BC in overtime 3-2 in the first round. In the consolation game against Harvard, though, he scored the game winning goal in the 6-5 victory. In 1983 he participated in his first final after the Huskies beat BU 4-3 in the semifinal before they fell to BC in the final 8-2.
In 1984 he was a part of Northeastern’s second Beanpot-winning team, as they beat Harvard 7-3 in the first round to set them up to play BU in the final. Averill and his brother Bob both had a goal in the game and the team won 5-2. In ’85 he led a Husky defense that swept BC and BU and allowed just 4 goals in two games to give the team its second straight Beanpot title, the only time NU has ever won back-to-back Beanpots.
Averill said that because of the nature of the tournament, luck was always involved, but that he felt fortunate to have played in the Beanpot and be recognized by the hall of fame.
“It’s a great tournament. You don’t always have a great game in the Beanpot,” he said. “You may not get a goal or you may not get an assist, you may be out there for goals against. There’s a little luck there, but it’s a great honor.”
Averill was an All-American in 1985 and was inducted into the Northeastern Hall of Fame in 2002. He is currently NU’s third leading scorer all time among defensemen, with 19 goals and 99 assists in 124 games. He now acts as president of Averill Engineering Group, a sales consultant firm.
