Mark Washington knew what was coming next.
Moments after Georgia Southern had tied the game, 27-27, on a long touchdown pass, the team set up for an extra point from their kicker Jesse Hartley that could eventually beat the Huskies.
However, as Washington and the defense prepared to try to block the attempt, he remembered that Hartley had been kicking low during the contest.
“When I went in the game, I told the guys that if I can get a good push, I can get my hands on it,” he said. “And when the ball snapped, I just gave a good effort and got my hands on the ball.”
The blocked extra point kept the game knotted up and a missed field goal by Hartley with nine seconds left in regulation sent it into overtime. Unfortunately, the Huskies would succumb in the extra frame, 34-28, Sept. 13.
But Washington, the senior and former center for Northeastern basketball, had still made an impression.
