The Northeastern Huskies (8-5, 0-0 CAA) failed to stop the Northwestern Wildcats (10-3, 1-1 Big Ten) 60-85 Dec. 29.
The Huskies have been on a roll this season and facing this Big Ten school was an important test, but the Wildcats contained Northeastern, only allowing three steals and one block in the game.
The Huskies only notched 46% successful field goals in the first half, but were able to improve to 57% in the second half. Northwestern significantly upgraded their success rate from 40% to 64%.
Junior guard LA Pratt earned the most points for the Huskies at 18, with junior guard Masai Troutman following closely behind with 17. Both these numbers trailed the Wildcats’ game-high Sunday afternoon, with graduate student guard Ty Berry and senior guard Brooks Barnhizer notching 23 and 22, respectively.
The Wildcats were able to use the Huskies’ turnovers to their advantage, scoring 34 points on turnovers alone.
Two minutes into the second half, Pratt tied the score at 35, and for a moment the Huskies held their own against the Big Ten team.
The tied score was short lived, as Berry scored another basket, starting off a scoring drive by the Wildcats.
With a little less than eight minutes left, Pratt made a layup, bringing Northeastern to 51, the Wildcats keeping the lead at 63. Northwestern continued to bump up their score as the Huskies attempted to catch them, with a final score of 60-85.
Northeastern takes on their first league opponent, the University of Delaware Blue Hens (7-6, 0-0 CAA), at home at 7 p.m. Jan. 2.
