The Northeastern women’s basketball team (1-12, 0-4 CAA) was demolished by the Towson Tigers (4-12, 2-3 CAA) 79-43 on the road Jan. 17.
Northeastern was coming off their closest game against a conference opponent, a Jan. 12 loss to the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks, 51-48. The Tigers had previously picked up their first conference win against the Seahawks by only one point Jan. 5, but this game showed a different side to the Tigers and Huskies.
Northeastern won the tip, but the Tigers struck first. Although Towson stayed in the lead the whole time, they were only winning 12-10 by the end of the first quarter. Shooting was close for both teams as the Tigers went 5-17 and the Huskies went 4-18. Five of Towson’s points came off turnovers from Northeastern, and the Huskies failed to score on any of Towson’s mistakes.
In the second quarter, the game became a back-and-forth battle with four lead changes. Northeastern went 7-16 from the field with eight points from in the paint, and Towson went 7-19 with most of their success coming from behind the arc. The first half ended with a score of 30-26 Towson.
Out of the half, the trend of the game began to change. Towson scored more points off fast breaks, turnovers, three-pointers and in the paint than Northeastern. As Towson’s shooting percentage increased to 46.67%, Northeastern’s dropped to 31.25%. The Tigers took their most commanding lead of the game in the third quarter, going up 49-30.
Northeastern fell apart during the final quarter of the game, leading to the team’s devastating defeat — the 12th of its 13 games this season. Northeastern’s shooting percentage dropped to 18.18% as they shot the fewest shots they had in any other quarter of the game, while Towson’s increased to 50% and had the most shots opportunities of the game in the fourth. Towson scored nine points off turnovers, fourteen second-chance points and 24 bench points, while Northeastern had none. Northeastern’s sole points came off two free throws, a jumper and a layup, leaving them outscored 30-6 in the quarter. The final score was 79-43, handing Northeastern their 12th loss of the season.
