After a tumultuous 3-25 season last year, Northeastern women’s basketball is looking to start fresh by hiring new assistant coach Jay Yve Modi and graduate assistant Taniyah Thompson, the team announced on its website and on Instagram.
Modi most recently worked as the head video coordinator for the Houston Rockets, creating film reels and analytical sheets post-game for the coaches and high performance players.
Modi’s last coaching experience was as an assistant coach for Hapoel Tel Aviv B.C. in the EuroCup, where he also created video and scouting reports. He also served as an assistant coach for Sarah Lawrence College’s men’s basketball program — where he helped coach the team to its winningest season in school history — as well as for the Dallas Mavericks in analytics and player development.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Jay to the program,” head coach Priscilla Edwards-Lloyd said in a press release on Northeastern Athletics’ website. “Jay brings a very unique set of experiences with both his Euroleague and NBA backgrounds. Jay has an elite basketball acumen and an ability to connect with people. We look forward to having him in our Husky Family.”
Thompson played overseas basketball for Gallardo Spor Kulübü in Turkey, where she averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Before going overseas, Thompson played basketball at Penn State University, the University of Georgia and East Carolina University. Throughout her collegiate career, she averaged 11.7 points and three rebounds per game.
Following her playing career, Thompson worked as a basketball trainer and videographer in Connecticut.
“Taniyah is a person I’ve had the chance to watch grow over the years,” Edwards-Lloyd said in the statement. “She has played at the highest levels of basketball professionally and at the collegiate level, and now, beginning her coaching journey. She will be a great model and teacher for our student-athletes on what it takes to excel on and off the court. We are elated to have her with Team 60!”
The Huskies are set to kick off their season against the Long Island University Brooklyn Sharks at home Nov. 3.
