Northeastern field hockey (1-0, 0-0 CAA) kicked off its season with a shutout win against the Stonehill College Skyhawks (0-1, 0-0 NEC) at home Aug. 29.
Junior midfielder and forward Alex Mega and freshman midfielder Jessica Garden each scored goals for the Huskies, while senior forward Anna-Kate Domingue picked up an assist. Senior goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge had two saves. As a whole, the Huskies played with more discipline than the Skyhawks, with only 20 fouls compared to Stonehill’s 36.
In the first quarter, Northeastern had five shots and three corner kick opportunities but failed to capitalize. The Huskies’ strong defense allowed them to hold off the Skyhawks, who only had one shot opportunity during the quarter, as well as seven fouls.
A minute-and-a-half into the second quarter, Mega scored the first goal of the season for the team with an assist from Domingue, putting Northeastern up 1-0. Loveridge got her first save in the second quarter with 22 seconds left, maintaining the Huskies’ lead.
The third frame was a strong performance for the Huskies, having a game-low three fouls within the quarter compared to the Skyhawks’ 10. Northeastern also outshot Stonehill 3-1, and Garden scored the second and final goal of the game in the 38th minute, Northeastern 2-0.
While the fourth frame was scoreless for both teams, Loveridge picked up her second save of the game 47 minutes in. Despite having four shots on goal, Northeastern failed to score a third time but still left with the win.
The Huskies are back in action Sept. 5 against the University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks (1-0, 0-0 America East) in Lowell.
