Northeastern field hockey (8-6, 3-1 CAA) earned a spot in the CAA championships with a one-goal win against the Drexel University Dragons (9-7, 2-2 CAA) Friday, Oct. 24. The Huskies’ victory placed them second in conference standings ahead of the NCAA semifinals Nov. 7.
Senior forward Emilia Adragna made the team’s only goal with an assist by fellow senior forward Emmy Stubbs. It was Stubbs’ first assist and Adragna’s fifth goal of the season, tying her as leading scorer with sophomore defender Camille Armaganian.
Though Drexel had 15 shots to Northeastern’s seven, only six of Drexel’s shots were on goal, while the Huskies made five shots on goal. Graduate student goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge blocked five shots, and senior midfielder and defender Anna-Kate Domingue blocked one.
Junior midfielder and forward Alex Mega started the action with a shot that Drexel’s sophomore goalkeeper Halle Geiger blocked. It was Northeastern’s only shot of the quarter.
The Dragons missed their first penalty shot a minute and a half in. Seven minutes in, they earned another penalty shot, and Domingue made her defensive save.
Drexel opened the second quarter with a shot that went wide, and another shot hit the crossbar five minutes in.
Mega and Adragna both made shots that Drexel blocked, but Adragna’s second shot with seven minutes left in the half turned out to be the game winner. Neither team made another shot before the buzzer sounded.
In the third period, Drexel missed another penalty shot, then blocked one by the Huskies. Nine minutes in, Loveridge blocked two back-to-back penalty shots by a Drexel attacker. Northeastern only had one shot in this quarter.
The scoreless final quarter saw six shots by Drexel. Freshman defender Lucy Walton made the Huskies’ only shot during a penalty corner, but Geiger blocked it. Loveridge blocked the Dragons’ last two shots, the first with one minute left on the clock and the second with only five seconds left, clinching the victory in the Huskies’ last home conference game.
The Huskies will play crosstown rival Boston University (5-9, 2-3 Patriot League) in their senior game Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. They go into the BU game ranked No. 43 by the NCAA, while the Terriers are ranked No. 50. It will be the last home game of the regular season.
