Northeastern field hockey (5-4, 1-1 CAA) secured a 3-1 victory against the William & Mary Tribe (1-8, 0-1 CAA) in Williamsburg Oct. 3. It was Northeastern’s second conference game, bringing it up to third place in CAA standings.
The Huskies earned their first goal less than three minutes in thanks to senior forward Emmy Stubbs’ shot assisted by senior captain, midfielder and defender Maya Prasad. It was Stubbs’ second goal of the season and Prasad’s second assist.
Freshman midfielder Jessica Garden and junior forward Julia Puccio both made shots on goal in the first quarter that were blocked by Tribe’s junior goalie Alexandra de Jesus.
The second quarter started with two unsuccessful penalty corners by senior defender and midfielder Ashley Pappas. Then, shots by Garden and graduate student forward and midfielder Laine Ambrose were both blocked by the goalkeeper.
Ambrose’s second shot on goal was Northeastern’s second point of the game, and Ambrose’s first of the season, assisted by junior captain, midfielder and forward Alex Mega.
Less than two minutes later, graduate student goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge blocked the Tribe’s first shot on goal. But she failed to block the team’s second, a penalty corner shot by senior defender Amelia Morgan, that brought the score to 2-1.
It only took two minutes for Northeastern to solidify their lead with another goal by Ambrose, assisted by senior forward Emilia Adragna.
The score would remain static at 3-1 for the rest of the game, with Northeastern’s defense preventing William & Mary from making any shots on goal. Adragna made two penalty corner shots in the third quarter that the Tribe goalkeeper blocked.
Northeastern made a strong but unsuccessful effort to widen the gap in the final period, with shots by Garden, Mega, Ambrose and graduate student forward and midfielder Lilly Smith. Smith’s went wide, defenders blocked Garden’s and the goalkeeper blocked Mega’s and Ambrose’s.
The Huskies will play the Boston College Eagles (3-6, 0-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) at home for the Beat Cancer game Oct. 5 at 12 p.m. It will be their 47th game against the Eagles, and the winner will break their 23-23 all-time tie.
