Northeastern field hockey (5-6, 1-1 CAA) lost to the University at Albany Great Danes (9-3, 2-0 American East) in an away game Oct. 12. Sophomore defender Camille Armaganian scored the Huskies’ only point at the last second — literally — to prevent the Huskies from being shut out in a 2-1 loss.
Albany scored in the first and third quarters and made eight shots on goal, while Northeastern made two. Graduate student goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge made six saves.
In the first quarter, Northeastern earned one penalty corner, and Albany earned two. The Great Danes earned 12 overall, tying the University of Massachusetts Lowell for most corner shots against Northeastern.
Redshirt senior defender and midfielder Jenna Zunic scored for the Great Danes with two minutes left in the quarter.
The Huskies earned a penalty corner shortly into the second, which senior defender and midfielder Ashley Pappas inserted to Armaganian, whose shot was blocked. Loveridge then blocked two back-to-back penalty corner shots by the Great Danes.
Junior forward Julia Puccio received a green card with three minutes left in the half, knocking Northeastern down a player, but the Huskies still kept the rest of the quarter scoreless.
The first move of the second half was a shot by graduate student captain forward and midfielder Lilly Smith that went wide.
Just under nine minutes into the third quarter, the Great Danes scored their second and final goal with a penalty shot by junior defender Mara Küskes, bringing the score to 2-0. Freshman forward Addison Polakoff tried to narrow the gap with a shot less than a minute later, but it went wide.
Polakoff made another wide shot in the fourth quarter, which remained scoreless until the last possible moment. Exactly 60 minutes into the game, Northeastern earned a penalty corner and Armaganian finally got the Huskies on the scoreboard with the penalty shot. She was assisted by junior captain, midfielder and forward Alex Mega and freshman defender Lucy Walton
That point tied Armaganian with senior forward Emilia Adragna for leading scorer at three points, a rare accomplishment for a defender. Both of Albany’s scorers were also defenders.
The Huskies will square off against the Hofstra University Pride (6-7, 0-2 CAA) in their third conference game Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. As the fourth out of six teams, they go into the game in the middle of the pack in conference standings with Hofstra trailing in fifth.
