Northeastern women’s hockey (21-6-1, 16-1-1 HE) took on the Holy Cross Crusaders Jan. 31 (18-8-2, 10-7-2 HE) in a 2-1 match up that the Huskies dominated.
Ten minutes into the first period, Northeastern went on its second power play of the night after a roughing call on senior forward Alexia Moreau. A minute later, freshman defender Ella Lloyd took a shot from the high slot off a pass from freshman forward Stryker Zablocki to open up scoring.
It was Lloyd’s fourth goal of the season, and she’s proven herself to be a necessary offensive presence for the Huskies. Her first goal was in her first NCAA matchup, her second in the final women’s hockey Matthews Arena game and her third was a shot in the last 15 seconds against the University of Connecticut.
The Huskies were taking good chances, but senior goaltender Abby Hornung shut down almost every opportunity, likely preventing the game from being a blowout by Northeastern. The Huskies took 10 shots on goal to Holy Cross’ four in the first period.
With less than three minutes left in the second period, the Crusaders took their first power play of the night after senior forward and captain Lily Shannon was put in the sin bin for tripping. It put freshman goaltender Renna Trembecky on her guard for the first time in the game, taking three shots as the team circled.
A minute into the power play, Zablocki got an interception before racing down on the breakaway to take on Hornung, who made a butterfly save to keep it 1-0.
Despite facing mostly spread out shots, Trembecky held her own in the net, making a total of 21 saves to finish the game.
On the power play yet again, the fifth of the night just six minutes into the third period, sophomore forward Morgan Jackson took a back door shot to the left of Hornung’s net after Zablocki stickworked through defenders to place an assist to the net. Zablocki was responsible for both primary assists in the game, undoubtedly making the game-winning impact.
With less than two minutes left in the game, junior forward Reghan Chadwick took a back-door shot to the left of the net a minute after Holy Cross put on an extra attacker in exchange for the empty net.
The Crusaders weren’t able to come through for the equalizer, and the Huskies earned three conference points after making 27 shots on goal to the Crusaders’ 22.
The Huskies will take on the University of Maine Black Bears (10-15-3, 6-9-3 HE) Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Walter Brown Arena.
