NU ranked third greenest school in world

Northeastern can add a new superlative to its list of accolades and recognitions. Last month, the GreenMetric 2013 World Rankings, compiled by the Universitas Indonesia, came out, and listed Northeastern as the “greenest” school in America and third in the world, trailing only the University of Nottingham in England and University College Cork National University of Ireland.

Entry of the Week: Wednesday, Jan. 19, 11:27 p.m. Someone reported the smell of marijuana coming from a room in Speare Hall. Officers spoke to two students in the room, who had placed a towel under the door, and whose eyes were “bloodshot and glassy.” No drugs were found.

Faculty Senate votes to redesign NU Core and master programs

The Faculty Senate approved the establishment of two new Masters programs and began an effort to clarify and redesign the University’s NU Core requirements at a meeting Jan. 29.

Student robbed at gunpoint in the Fens area

Three men accosted and pointed a gun at a student in the Fens area on Jan. 24, according to Northeastern University Division of Public Safety (NUPD). The men took the student’s bank card and fled down Forsyth Street, towards the intersection of Ruggles and Parker streets.

Just as he starts any company meeting at Harry’s razor, Jeff Raider asked the audience to stand up and engage in a giant tournament of rocks, paper, scissors at the Curry Student Center Tuesday. This is Raider’s way of getting everyone present engaged in the group process. Raider, the co-founder of Harry’s razor and Warby Parker eyewear, was invited by the Northeastern Entrepreneurs Club to speak to students about his experiences building his companies.

Entry of the week: Thursday, Jan. 23, 5:31 p.m. A staff member called to report a purple backpack containing a Windows laptop, a wallet and other personal items was stolen from the Sacred Space in Ell Hall. The victim stated she was meditating for about 15 minutes and when she was finished, the bag was gone. The bag was about 15 feet from her, and she did not see or hear anyone else in the area.

Entry of the week: Thursday, Jan. 16, 10:53 a.m. A student reported someone took her underwear from the laundry room in West Village H. He tied them together in knots and wrote inappropriate messages on them.

DivestNU rallies for oil divestiture

Students in DivestNU, an on-campus sub-committee of the Husky Environmental Action Team, gathered in Krentzman Quadrangle to march to President Joseph E. Aoun’s office on Jan. 17. The committee delivered NU HEAT’s petition against the university’s investments in the fossil fuel industry that contribute to climate change.

Legacy of racial tension felt in Raytheon Amphitheater

Douglas Blackmon’s illuminating book, “Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II,” has been honored with a New York Times Bestseller listing and a Pulitzer Prize. On Friday, it received another, humbler honor: the author made an appearance in Northeastern’s Raytheon Amphitheater, where he spoke about his novel and invited in the beginnings of what could prove to be an expansive discussion about race among interested students and faculty.

Budget priorities survey reveals students’ concerns

The 2013 Budget Priorities Survey by the Student Government Association (SGA) revealed that most surveyed students emphasized the importance of instructors’ qualities and evaluations and were dissatisfied with the lack of accessibility to NUwave in residence halls.

President Aoun’s salary increases

President Joseph E. Aoun was recently ranked the second highest paid private college president in the United States in 2011 – the most recent year for which data is available – according to a December report in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Aoun’s $3,121,864 was second only to Robert Zimmer of the University of Chicago, who topped the list at $3,358,723.
