While COVID-19 outbreaks continue to pop up at similar sized schools across the country, Northeastern avoided a similar fate so far, thanks in part to the rigorous testing regimen that is a lynchpin of the university’s ambitious reopening plan.
In a decision that students have called “rushed,” “severe” and showing “zero-tolerance,” Northeastern announced Sept. 4 that it would dismiss 11 first-year students in the N.U.in Boston program caught violating social distancing guidelines.

Students approached the sleek building in a way similar to that of a drive-through restaurant. They drove down a side street, rolled down the windows, gave their names to LightView assistants and quickly signed in. Then a crew of workers would rapidly approach the incoming vehicle, ready to delicately unload the car of every item possible. While students signed in one by one, receiving their keys and information packets, their luggage was being transported to their rooms.
Fake news and social media disinformation were topics of conversation Thursday afternoon in a panel discussion co-sponsored by Northeastern University-Seattle and the World Affairs Council-Seattle and hosted by New York Times technology reporter Davey Alba.
The 11 N.U.in Boston students dismissed from Northeastern for gathering will have their tuition payment credited to the spring semester, according to the Northeastern Media Relations department.

Northeastern hosted its first-ever Fall Fest World today to introduce all of the different student organizations offered on campus. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the university decided to move the traditionally in-person event to a video game-like format, where students roam around as a husky character to various booths to get information on clubs.
Like most years’ Convocation speeches, the university’s presentation focused primarily on experiential learning opportunities and the benefits of being a part of the Northeastern community as speakers described what incoming students have to look forward to. While the ceremony was entirely virtual due to COVID-19, there were minimal mentions of the pandemic, except for President Joseph E. Aoun’s closing remarks emphasizing the importance of safety and wellness of the community.
