The News says goodbye to one of its own

October 10, 2012

Last week, The News lost a member of our family. Naman Shah, a member of the class of 2014, died Oct. 5 of multiple organ failure. Shah, originally from Milford, was pursuing a degree in finance, marketing and entrepreneurship in the D’Amore-McKim School of Business. For...

Letter to the editor: The worker’s rights struggle at NU

October 10, 2012

The visible struggle of workers’ rights has cast a dim shadow on Northeastern’s campus in recent months. From dining hall workers’ victorious and liberating efforts to unionize last spring to the janitors’ triumph last week in settling a progressive contract, Northeastern...

Editorial: Making an informed decision should be a student priority on Nov. 6

October 4, 2012
In just over a month, American citizens will be asked to vote for the next president of this country. Every four years, we are presented with at least two candidates and asked to learn about their beliefs and political strategy, and then make a decision as to which would be better for the country and go to the polls to cast our vote. As citizens, we should respect the seriousness of the elections and take the time to make an informed decision.

Letter to the Editor: Iranian president an unwelcomed guest at UN

October 4, 2012
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made his last official splash in New York this week, giving his eighth and final address as Iran’s president to the United Nations General Assembly. Why a Holocaust-denying, genocidal leader of an oppressive regime is invited to speak at the United Nations, however, is beyond me.

Column: University housing a hassle

October 4, 2012
As most students know, Northeastern has a housing problem. Area residents agree; as they have many times before, Northeastern’s neighbors aired their complaints at a community meeting September 20. As I’ve mentioned in these pages, local residents have a right to be irked by the behavior of some students living off campus.

Column: To swipe or not to swipe

September 28, 2012
The library swipe system, when it was implemented last year, seemed a bit silly. Instead of taking my Husky Card out and feeling like a mildly–badass federal agent flashing it to the ever– vigilant library guards for admittance, I found myself awkwardly and frantically swiping my card at every imaginable angle to get that light green so I could run into the stacks and hide from the angry line forming behind me. I don’t get out much.

Editorial: University should disclose cost of renovations

September 28, 2012
Northeastern has been renovating a great deal of buildings around campus recently. The new Curry Student Center, high-tech library facilities on the second floor, and the renovation of classroom and research spaces have enhanced the nature of the school not only in the eyes of students and faculty, but with popular ranking lists as well, as Northeastern continues to move upward in the US News and World Report rankings. Like many private schools, Northeastern comes with a price tag that would make students from 30 years ago faint, but that’s just the nature of the game nowadays. Schools are expensive, but students still wonder, where does some the money that we pay go?

Editorial: Northeastern – a steady rise to the top

September 20, 2012
On Sept. 11, President Joseph Aoun took to Twitter to announce that the university would make an “unprecedented announcement” the following day. While Aoun was most likely referring to the announcement that the College of Business received a $60 million gift (and a new name), the Tweet began an exciting few days for Northeastern.

Column: Anti-Muslim Sentiments can only harm

September 20, 2012
In the conclusion of my last column for The News, I lamented that important foreign policy issues were not receiving an appropriate amount of attention this election cycle. Since the tragedy at the American consulate in Libya last week, this is no longer the case. Unfortunately, with a renewed focus on foreign policy, a dangerous theme is reemerging that has been largely dormant since the Bush years.

Letter to the Editor: For one student, Obama’s energy promise falls short

September 20, 2012
Despite the fact that I did not support President Obama when he was a presidential candidate four years ago, I became one of the millions of Americans who threw their support behind the president-elect in the hope that he would lead us for the next four years towards prosperity. I had high hopes that he would create a strong energy policy, one based on decreasing foreign oil dependence and revitalizing the green energy movement within America.

Column: Misleading message targets NU

September 14, 2012
“We are not the ones who support convicted terrorists or who promote the teachings of homophobic, wife beating, anti-Semites,” he wrote. Who, exactly, are the homophobic, wife-beating anti-Semites, and who is supporting them? As of press time, Jacobs hadn’t clarified.
