Art professor Sophia Ainslie created the mural “In Person” with the help of four students and her intern as a way of engaging with a wider audience.

Entry of the week: Thursday, Dec. 4 This year, kick off the holiday season with the annual Boston Common Tree Lighting. Join Mayor Martin J. Walsh for the evening’s festivities, which will include visits from Chaley Rose of ABC’s “Nashville,” NBC’s “The Voice” contestant Brittany Butler, the New England Patriots Cheerleaders, Nova Scotia band The Stanfields, the Floorlords dance troupe and surprise acts announced at the event. The official Christmas tree, delivered to Boston from Nova Scotia, as well as many other trees throughout the common will be lit at the event. WCVB TV’s Anthony Everett and JC Monahan will host a live broadcast of the event at 6 p.m.; Boston Common; 6 p.m.; free.

“If we burn, then you burn with us.” Jennifer Lawrence’s words echo through the theater, sending chills down the spines of eager “Hunger Games” fans gathered to watch the latest installment in the series. This film is the first half of the on-screen interpretation of Suzanne Collins’ novel “Mockingjay,” the third in the “Hunger Games” trilogy. The series tells the story of a dystopian future in which children must fight to the death in an annual tournament called the Hunger Games, designed to maintain the control of an oppressive government.

There was an orchestra in my kitchen the other night. To the fury of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, I sliced and diced onions like I had something against them. Minced prosciutto and ground beef sizzled over flames, my cheeks flushed and my belly growled in anticipation of the reward. Outside, unforgiving wind chills made their way into insulated coats. Inside, the oven and radiator were the most trusted companions. I splashed dry red wine into the pan and it hissed as it bathed the meat. Tomato paste dribbled out of a glass jar, painting the sauce a vibrant red. These are the sights and sounds treasured most to a cook. But the most rewarding? An empty plate with the fork clanging down on it from blissful satiation.
