Long road to recovery worth it for soccer’s Calderone

A few days after a win against University of Rhode Island in mid-September 2011, the women’s soccer team was preparing for the conference season to begin. It was supposed to be a day of rest for the Huskies, but the team held a movement session at Cabot Center. Freshman center-back Bianca Calderone, who had recently started her first four collegiate games, marked a teammate. The painful series of events that followed were transformative for the Wellesley-born lifelong soccer player.

In this past weekend’s quad meet in Fairfax, Va., Northeastern’s swimming and diving team saw one victory over College of Charleston and two losses at the hands of George Mason University and Towson University. Two conference losses this past week left Northeastern men’s soccer as the fifth-seed heading into this weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament. The Huskies dropped Saturday’s match to the College of Charleston, 1-0, before rounding out the regular season slate with a 4-2 loss to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington (UNCW).

A few years ago, I sat on my couch with my then-girlfriend, flipping through the channels trying to find something to watch. I arrived at “Remember the Titans,” a film that is on my shortlist of movies I feel obligated to watch every time it is on. After a few minutes, my ex-girlfriend said callously, “let me guess, through the football team’s success, the high school and surrounding area band together and overcome the racial tension dividing the area,” (I’m paraphrasing here).

However, unlike last year, their playoff journey will not be cut short – the Huskies ousted the University of Delaware Sunday in an overtime thriller which ended in penalty kicks.

After putting together a four-game winning streak, the Northeastern men’s soccer team dropped two straight contests this week, losing its first conference game of the season on Saturday before dropping their final non-conference bout on Tuesday. The Huskies fell to the College of William & Mary, 1-0, in Virginia before dropping a 2-0 decision to the University of Hartford back home at Parsons Field.
