Women’s basketball drops season-opening nailbiter to South Dakota

With it being the annual Boston Public Schools Day at the Cabot Center, the energy of the environment was off the charts in anticipation for the start of the game, and the start of Northeastern’s season. Unfortunately, the anticipation was met with defeat, as the Northeastern women’s basketball team was narrowly defeated by the visiting South Dakota Coyotes, 80-76.

Women’s hockey shuts out Boston University to sweep weekend series

The high-flying Northeastern women’s hockey team bested Boston University to move to a strong 7-1-0 on the season, limiting the Terriers to just one goal in two games.

The Huskies began the weekend series against Boston University on a high note Friday evening, as they took down the Terriers in comeback fashion, 2-1.

The Minutemen avenged an Oct. 15 loss to NU and skated out of Boston with a 6-3 victory to further elevate their status as Hockey East favorites.

Through six games, Northeastern has improved its USCHO ranking (currently 10th after starting the season at 15), posted a 4-1-1 record and defeated the highest-ranked Hockey East team (UMass Amherst). But there have been alarming occurrences, too.

With a 5-0 win over Drexel University Thursday night, and a subsequent 4-0 win over Elon Sunday, the Northeastern Huskies will compete in their ninth-straight CAA tournament, the longest streak among active teams.

Coming off a tie with unranked Holy Cross, men’s hockey needed to bounce back. They got a mixed bag, splitting their two-game series at perennial NCAA powerhouse No. 14 St. Cloud State with a 4-1 win Friday and a 2-1 loss Saturday.
