Northeastern students should not be fooled by right wing commentator Bill O’Reilly’s claims against Economics Professor M. Shahid Alam. As an American, doesn’t Professor Alam have the right to freely express his views? Mr O’Reilly, Fox News, and other extreme conservative media and interest groups are targeting any and all University faculty across the US for expressing any viewpoints to the contrary of their own. This activity is ushering in a new era of McCarthyism and censorship which will rip the fabric of American democracy. As a Northeastern Alumnus who values free speech, I implore you to seek all the facts, and support Professor Alam and all others who dissent or who may hold unpopular views. Who knows, the free speech rights you save may be your own.
