To say that junior diver Adela Gavozdea was on a hot streak coming into the NCAA Diving Championships this past week in Texas is an understatement. Gavozdea had dominated her competition in the latter part of the season, winning her last 10 diving events en route to being named the America East Conference Most Outstanding Diver.
That’s why expectations were high when Gavozdea made the trip to Texas A’M to compete against the nation’s best. Swimming coach Roy Coates predicted that Gavozdea would do well in the platform, her specialty, placing as high as 12th. Coates’ prediction proved to be too high for the junior diver, but she did make an impressive showing, placing 16th in the platform dive, 36th in the one-meter and 37th in the three-meter.
“Overall, I thought she performed really well,” Coates said. “She was diving against the best in the country and even the world, and she did very, very well.”
