After serving as director of the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution for four years, Bill Fischer will be leaving his position Oct. 29 for a new position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Fischer, who came to the university in 2000, designed and implemented the mediation program, which tackles disputes among students. He also dealt with violations of the Student Code of Conduct and worked closely with other departments on campus.
“I think we did a very, very good job of according students fairness, respect and dignity throughout their interactions with our office,” Fischer said of his tenure with the program.
At MIT, he will be taking on the role of associate dean for student conduct and risk management for the Division of Student Life, a similar position with more responsibilities, he said. He will start his new job Nov. 1.
Before coming to Northeast-ern, Fischer earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from Villanova University in 1982. He then received his law degree from Seton Hall University in 1986 before starting at his first of three New Jersey law firms in the practice of insurance defense litigation. At the third firm, Matthews, White and Fischer, he made partner in 1995 and worked for two years before starting his career in higher education.
Fischer worked in the student judicial office at Illinois State University from 1997 to 1998 before leaving for the University of New Hampshire. In 2000, he answered Northeastern’s call.
When he moves on to his new position across the river, Fischer said he will miss his staff and the students he has worked with. Though he is not sure who will be taking over for him, to his successor, he offers advice:
“Work hard in establishing strong relationships on campus; with students, with faculty and members of the community who are going to in any way relate to or interface or interact with the department.”
