As part of an occasional series, The News ambushed unsuspecting students and demanded they justify the songs that played when their iPods were put on shuffle, however embarrassing.

“Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
“There’s this really cute YouTube video of a dad and daughter singing this song. Me and my roommate used to sing it and imitate the little girl.”
“A Day in the Life” by The Beatles
“I’m obsessed with The Beatles. I have almost every CD of theirs. This song has always been one of my favorites.”

“She’s a great artist – very R&B and modern funk but with a timeless jazzy style.”
“From the Beginning” by Emerson, Lake and Palmer
“They have an incredible sound. They’re an older rock band that took some of the first steps into electronica.”
“E Lucevan Le Stelle” by East Village Opera Company
“This group is famous for making rock versions of classical music. They do a great job of staying true to the classical roots of the songs but also appealing to modern audiences.”
“Ballad of a Teenage Queen” by Johnny Cash
“This one doesn’t need much explanation. I mean, it’s Johnny Cash. This is a brilliant song.”
“Knockin” remix by Travis Barker
“He adds great beats to classic rap songs. It really brings new life to them.”

“I seem to have a soundtrack going. I think my iPod is trying to tell me something.”

“The Vines go way back. Come on, we were all 13 once.”
“Scars” by Papa Roach
“Man I wish I had cooler music. This is incredibly emasculating. Again I say, we were all 13 once.”
