While many college students enjoy a three-month summer filled with home-cooked meals, days by the pool and catching up with high school friends, Huskies aren’t always as lucky. Whether it’s co-op or classes, June, July and August are sure to be busy. But just because summers at Northeastern are not spent on vacation doesn’t mean students can’t improvise.
Take a break and soak up the sun (and the alcohol) at these beachy bars and restaurants.
Sail Loft, located on 80 Atlantic Ave., is directly on the wharf and caters to a casual, low-key crowd both as a restaurant and a bar. Known for serving free Oreos to compliment the drinks, the menu includes traditional American food and seafood. Sail Loft is accessible by the Orange or Green line to Haymarket and open until 2 a.m.
The Landing If you’re headed towards the waterfront, The Landing is right off the blue line at One Long Wharf. This restaurant/bar is completely outdoors, so plan on visiting on a sunny day. The Landing’s casual atmosphere tends to draw more of an after-work crowd looking to unwind after a long day at the office. This spot is not ideal for the typical late-night bar hoppers; it closes at 11 p.m.
Daedalus During a Cambridge excursion, take a pit-stop at Daedalus, off the red line to Harvard Square. It can be slightly pricey for college kids (about $10 a cocktail) but their extensive drink menu and sleek, wood-paneled rooftop patio is worth the extra couple of bucks. Daedalus is open until 2 a.m.
Deep Ellum Open until 1 a.m., Allston’s Deep Ellum restaurant/bar has a wide variety of on-tap beer. It’s also known for its eclectic cocktail list, including “The Bohannon” (Death’s Door gin, Chartreuse, Swedish Punsch and black pepper) or The Man With No Name” (Zapopan Blanco tequila, agave, Peychaud’s and Mole bitters, Chartreuse rinse), among others. Grab a chair and relax on the bar’s snug rooftop patio. The bar is located on Cambridge Street near the Harvard avenue green line stop.
The Field Pub Just a few blocks from the red line to Central Square, The Field Pub is the quintessential New England sports bar. Grab a bite to eat from their bar menu, which ranges from items such as fish and chips to shepherd’s pie, order a beer and watch a game on the outdoor patio. It’s also good for those looking to stick to a budget; at $5.50 a pint, that’s actually achievable. The Field Pub is open until 1 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
The Whiskey Priest Though it’s a bit of a hike off the Orange line to State Street, The Whiskey Priest is ideal for those looking for a nightlife scene. In addition to 32 draft beers, over 100 kinds of whiskey and a waterfront roof deck, Whiskey Priest also features live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Check out Fighting Friday, a Boston-based rock band, this Friday, June 7, at 10 p.m.
