Plans call for large complex near International Village
A proposal for a major development on a plot of land near International Village could bring a high-rise building filled with retail, office and living space to the area around Northeastern’s main campus. The Bay State Banner reported that developers introduced their plans — which outline designs for more than 200 apartments, a parking garage and a National Center for Afro-American Artists museum space — at a public meeting May 16. The site, dubbed “Tremont Crossing,” would sit on “Parcel 3,” across the street from Boston Police headquarters, according to the Banner. In 2006, an early proposal for the spot called for a 1,400-bed Northeastern residence hall.
Northeastern team uses tweets to predict American Idol winner
A group of Northeastern researchers analyzed tweets to successfully predict the winner of American Idol last month. The team’s work was described in posts on InSolution, Northeastern’s research blog. An early post on May 23 explained how researchers examined overnight activity on Twitter that included the hashtag, #idol. Based on their analysis of American tweets, the group predicted that Phillip Phillips would win. When the champion was announced, the Northeastern team’s theory was supported by a Phillips victory.
