Winter break athletics roundup

By Jill Saftel, News Staff

While most Northeastern students enjoyed winter break, some athletes were on the court, in the pool or on the track. Here’s what a few Northeastern teams have been up to since finals week:

Women’s Basketball

Women’s basketball continues to dominate with the school’s best record so far this season. At 8-4, .667 overall, and 1-0 in conference play, the Huskies are on a two-game winning streak and will be hosting College of William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at Solomon Court tonight.

After a 78-51 victory over University of Massachusetts-Amherst at home on Dec. 22, the Huskies headed to Miami for the Florida International University Sun & Fun Classic, but faced some tough luck with losses to FIU and Quinnipiac University. Quick to bounce back, Northeastern not only won in their first game back from Florida, but stunned University of Rhode Island in a massive 94-53 victory. Following that, a 69-63 win over conference opponent George Mason University on Jan. 6 put the Huskies up 1-0 for the start of conference play.

Track & Field

Northeastern’s men’s and women’s track and field teams have only competed in two events so far this season:  At home for the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 1 and in Cambridge for the Harvard Open a week later on Dec. 8. The women took three wins and 25 top 10 finishes at the Carisella Invitational, with the men taking home five wins and 28 top 10 finishes.

The positive results continued at the Harvard Open where junior Max Milder won the weight throw. It was his second win this season after winning the same event at the Carisella Invite. Freshman Camille Gooden also notched her second straight win in the 200-meter dash. Hers was one of three victories for the women’s team at Harvard.

Both teams will travel to New Haven, Conn. for the Yale Invitational on Jan. 12.

Swimming & Diving

The swimming and diving team left off before break with a 158-142 loss to University of Massachusetts-Amherst at Barletta Natatorium on Dec. 1, but spent their break in much warmer weather than that of the Northeastern campus.

The team traveled to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico for their annual training trip from Dec. 28 to Jan. 5, which included a non-scored meet against Tufts University on Jan. 4.

Their first meet of 2013 will take place Jan. 12 in Philadelphia against Drexel University and University of Delaware.
