In its second to last meet of the regular season Saturday, the swimming and diving team won eight of 16 events at Dartmouth, but wasn’t able to emerge with the win as they fell, 165-135.
‘ ‘ ‘ ‘We would have liked to win; we knew it was going to be close,’ said head coach Roy Coates. ‘Our team and probably Dartmouth’s team is beat up. We’ve put in a lot of months of training. We matched up very evenly. The performances overall were very good.’
‘ ‘ ‘ Senior co-captain Elena Alvarez and junior Katherine Fugge were the top scorers for the Huskies, earning 26 and 22 points, respectively. Alvarez won the 100- (1:07.44) and 200-yard (2:27.97) breaststroke events while Fugge won the 200-freestyle in 1:55.47 and the 200-individual medley (2:11.11).
‘ ‘ ‘ Freshman Jill Kearns and junior Erica Smotrycz each contributed 19 points. Kearns won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.05, while Smotrycz won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.64 seconds.
‘ ‘ ‘ Kearns, Smotrycz and Alvarez, along with senior co-captain Alexandra Doty, were part of the second-place 400-medley relay team.
‘ ‘ ‘ With the last regular season meet’ Friday at Havard, the Huskies (7-6, 2-3 Colonial Athletic Association) are getting ready for the CAA championships, which will take place Feb. 25 to Feb. 28 at George Mason.’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ ‘ ‘We’re going to start to fine tune and allow the body to recuperate,’ Coates said. ‘[Then] they’ll be ready to swim the best times of their lives when they get to the CAA championships.’
