The Northeastern women’s hockey team played Providence College this weekend, losing 4-1 on Saturday at Schneider Arena. On Sunday, the Huskies turned it around at Matthews Arena as sophomore goaltender Sarah Foss notched her first career win with a 6-2 victory.
The Huskies outshot the Friars 43-20 in Saturday’s game, but the game still didn’t go Northeastern’s way.
“I thought we played pretty well,” Head Coach Dave Flint said. “They got some bounces and were pretty opportunistic. There were great shots on net, and we only had one goal.”
With under a minute and a half left in the first period, Providence started things off with a power play goal by senior forward Allison Micheletti from the slot.
Providence junior forward Brittney Thunstrom scored 25 seconds into the second period, hurling a shot past senior goaltender Chloe Desjardins.
Seven minutes in, sophomore forward Hayley Scamurra put the Huskies on the board with a power play goal, her third goal of the season. Freshman defenseman Lauren Kelly sent the puck to Scamurra up the right wall, who carried it into the slot and took a shot to make the score 2-1.
The Huskies could not make a comeback though, as the Friars scored two more goals to finish out the game.
Less than two minutes after Scamurra’s goal, Providence sophomore forward Cassidy Carels advanced the Friars’ lead off a breakaway.
Despite numerous shots on net from Northeastern, Providence senior forward Beth Hanrahan made the final score 4-1 off her own rebound.
In Sunday’s game, the Huskies started fresh against the Friars. Northeastern scored four power play goals, and Foss started in net for the Huskies, helping lead the team to victory.
“It was great to get my first win today, but more importantly, I’m proud of my teammates for coming together and bringing the energy that they did,” Foss said. “Their support was the reason I felt confident today.”
Flint was also satisfied with the team’s success, stating that the Huskies capitalized on opportunities at the right time.
“I thought we played well,” he said. “We executed when we needed to.”
Ten minutes into the first period, Providence received a penalty for holding. Junior captain forward Kendall Coyne took advantage of the NU power play and scored the first goal of the game.
Sophomore defenseman Heather Mottau dropped a pass in the slot, and Coyne was there to pick it up. The captain snapped a hard wrister that flew past Providence junior goaltender Allie Morse into the top right hand corner.
In the last few minutes of the period, the Friars got a chance to score. With 1:13 left and a faceoff in the NU zone, Providence senior forward Haley Frade won the faceoff to Carels. Carels took a shot that deflected off an NU defenseman and past Foss, ending the first period 1-1.
The Huskies dominated the second period, however, scoring five goals and keeping Providence out of NU’s net.
Providence received a penalty at the 1:43 for hooking, and Northeastern’s energy was high on the power play. Coyne scored again for the Huskies, taking a shot from the right circle at 2:01.
Northeastern did not stop there. The Huskies scored four more times in the second period, with back-to-back goals from junior defenseman Jordan Krause and freshman forward Denisa Krizova, 14 seconds apart, midway through the period.
“I thought [Krizova’s] goal was great,” Flint said. “That kind of got us rolling.”
Kelly and senior forward Chelsey Goldberg followed with goals of their own. Kelly scored her fourth goal of the season and Goldberg scored her first.
Just when it looked like the game would end in a five-point NU victory, Providence freshman forward Brooke Boquist pushed one in with 0.5 seconds left in regulation to make the final score 6-2.
The Huskies hope to pick up two Hockey East wins this weekend against Vermont in two back-to-back home games.
“This week in practice, it’s going to be important to build off of the momentum we created today and stay focused for Vermont next weekend,” Foss said.
