For some students moving into new spaces, when the furniture’s in and the dust settles, they may be left wondering, “What do I do next?”
Below are some tips and tricks to help spice up undecorated dorms and apartments, based on advice from students and a local designer. Just because a student’s in college, doesn’t mean his or her space has to look that way.
1. To fill in blank space in his Douglass Park apartment, middler engineering major David Rothenberg uses a projector to cast whatever image is on his television onto a large white wall in the common room.
“I watch a lot of movies on it,” Rothenberg said. “My roommate set it up last year and let a screensaver run on it. It’s better than wallpaper.”
2. Nancy Hackett, interior design director of the New England Art and Design School at Suffolk University, said to always keep things tidy.
“I do think that organization is the key to space saving,” Hackett said.
3. Hacket also suggests picking two to three colors that reflect your personality, and sticking to them.
“The more individual they are, the more the place will feel like home,” Hackett said. “So if they like pink, go for it.”
4. Junior anthropology major Abby McIntire suggested adding frames around posters.
“I used a lot of posters and bought cheap frames to make them look more like art,” she said.
