The Northeastern baseball team (8-6, 0-0 CAA) fell to the Bryant University Bulldogs (6-8-1, 0-0 America East) on the road March 13 with a final score of 13-3.
During their only game against a Rhode Island team, the Husky offense got a few on base but failed to capitalize in the first inning. The Bulldogs scored first on a two-out RBI single. Right after, Bryant majorly took advantage of a bases-clearing double that extended the lead to 4-0.
Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan McCarroll started off the afternoon for the Huskies in his first career D1 start. Despite the runs, McCarroll threw his fourth strike out of the afternoon to end the second inning.
The Bulldogs added on one more in the third and two more in the fourth, making the lead 7-0. Bryant had the bases loaded again in the fifth, yet a fly ball out to left field ended the opportunity.
The sixth inning was productive for the Huskies. Junior shortstop Jack Goodman led off with a single and pitchers’ balk advancing him to second and putting him in scoring position. Catcher redshirt freshman Will Fosberg scored Goodman on a two-out RBI single, making the score 7-1. Graduate student catcher and designated hitter Gregory Bozzo smacked a single, moving Fosberg to third. An error on a chopper to third, hit by sophomore third baseman and pinch runner Chris Walsh, allowed all runners to reach safely and score Fosberg.
The third run in the top half of the sixth came from junior second baseman Carmelo Musacchia. A blooper to right could not be stopped by the Bulldog’s second baseman, allowing Bozzo to score, narrowing the gap to just four runs.
Bryant though was not ready to back down. In the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs added on four more with three RBI doubles and a sacrifice bunt. With the Huskies unable to add any on in the top of the frame and Bryant gaining an extra two in the bottom of the seventh, the game ended via the run rule. The final score being 13-3.
Northeastern holds a 2-6 all-time record when playing at Bryant.
The Huskies play the Harvard Crimson in their home opener of the season March 14 at 2:30 p.m.
