Northeastern women’s soccer (1-3-3, 0-0 CAA) tied the University of Vermont Catamounts (2-2-3, 0-0 AE) 2-2 in its final nonconference game of the season Sept. 11. After leading for the majority of the game, the Huskies ceded two goals to the Catamounts in the final five minutes to tally the draw.
Vermont kicked off with a strong start as senior forward Lauren DeGroot had the first shot of the game for the Catamounts in the third minute. Nine minutes later, senior midfielder Sydney Remington followed up with a shot that went out to the left.
The Catamounts kept the pressure up as the half progressed, and in the 17th minute, junior midfielder Emma Warren and graduate student midfielder Jazyln Oviedo fired shots that went wide and high. A minute later, graduate student defender Torie Snyder sent another shot toward the net that sailed over the bar once again.
In the 24th minute, Warren took another that went out to the upper right of the goal. Less than a minute later, the Huskies finally responded with their first shot of the game from senior forward Lauren Ahles, which soared past senior goalkeeper Kylee Carafoli into the left corner of the net to put Northeastern up 1-0.
Two minutes later, the Catamounts looked to equalize with a shot from DeGroot, but junior goalkeeper and captain Eliza Teplow stopped the shot. In the 35th minute, DeGroot sent another shot toward the lower left corner, which Teplow picked off again to preserve Northeastern’s lead heading into half time.
The Catamounts regained strength as the second half began, firing three shots in the first five minutes, but none made it on frame. In the 51st minute, sophomore forward Claire Murray responded for the Huskies with a shot from afar, catching Carafoli off her line and finding the net to clinch a two-goal lead for Northeastern.
The Huskies kept their lead for the following 15 minutes, holding a strong defensive line to prevent opportunities for Vermont and sending two shots in from sophomore forwards Lughano Nyondo and Foluke Balogun.
In the 67th minute, senior midfielder Kaley Kreutzer put a threatening ball on goal for the Catamounts, but Teplow saved the shot in the bottom center of the net. Three minutes later, graduate student forward Bridget Gleason hit the ball toward the bottom right of the net for the Huskies, which was saved by Carafoli.
Northeastern continued to defend successfully and held its lead for another 15 minutes, bringing the team into the final five minutes of the half.
As the clock ticked down with the win in reach, the Huskies lost focus and allowed Vermont a last minute push. In the 86th minute, Remington scored for Vermont off an assist from Snyder and junior forward Madeline Gardner, knocking Northeastern’s lead down to a single goal. A minute later, Gardner scored again for the Catamounts off of an assist from Snyder, equalizing the score at 2-2.
Four minutes later, the final whistle blew and the Huskies left with a tie — a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise successful match.
Northeastern will host the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks (4-3-1, 0-0 CAA) to begin CAA play at Parsons Field Sept. 18.
